Poor performance

I love this game but it does seem to be poorly optimized. Has anyone else been able to determine if the gpu is used or is it all software rendered? The reason I suspect this is the resolution seems to have a direct reltionship to the framerate and responsiveness. Any tips or mods for improved framerates?

Enabling opengl makes the game smoother and activates the Steam overlay.
