Dungeons of Dredmor

Permadeath workaround?
So... I died in a permadeath game. I didn't close DoD. I went on another computer, logged into steam, and downloaded DoD there. After retrieving the cloud sync files, I opened the game, and lo and behold my saves from my permadeath game were still intact.

I suspect that DoD cloud-syncs the saves only after you actually close the game, and that the next time I log in from the original machine steam will give me the option to either sync the local save to the cloud or sync the cloud save to the local machine.

Anyway, since my death was BS (randomly TP'ed into a battle room due to a latent effect of the Gnomish Cap that isn't documented anywhere on the item I could see), I think I'll just play on. :D

What's the point of using the permadeath option if you're just gonna chicken out when ♥♥♥♥ happens?
Cheater, Cheater, Fungus Eater!
Played the game, but couldn't beat her!
Thought his hack was pretty swell!
Until he went to Diggle Hell!!!

Just reporting what I perceive to be a bug.

Of course, I suppose someone could just backup their entire installation directory and restore if things go bad too.
or you could, you know, turn off perma-death before starting your game.
Pff, save scumming. W/e nubz.

This made me laugh for a few minutes.
There are several ways to use exploits in the game. That is true of many games, actually. I won't encourage it by posting other ways that I've heard of to cheat, but just saying that it's a single player game. I think the game is more fun, and rewarding if you play without using exploits, but to each his own.

Black Rose Angel's post is indeed f***ing legendary.
MANY items (like the Gnomish Cap) have unintended/undocumented side effect for using them. That's part of the roguelike charm. In more traditional roguelikes, it's the potions, scrolls, wands, etc that have random effects. "You pick up a blue potion." What's a Blue Potion? Is it healing? Insta Death? Random Teleport? No one knows, till you drink it. And if you die, and you start over, the Blue Potion is likely something completely different from last time!

But since this game has crafting (and it wouldn't be very fun to craft a random item most of the time), little things like this take the place of more traditional roguelike randomization mechanics.

But now you know. Gnomeish Hats do X. Some other item may do Y. Always be careful what you wear, and never blame the game when you die. It's never unfair, it just seems that way sometimes.
