Do most people play dlc or vanilla?

I have FS without Red, I love the game but there's not that many people online. I wonder if I will see more players if I buy the DLC. Are they even separated?

No they are not separated. The number of players online at a given time is small but thankfully it's slightly missleading. Eg when I play the game I just log in, commit my turns and log out so I don't spend any time in the lobby.

Aren't there new online modes in Red?
Basically, will I see any difference in online play if I buy this DLC?

Yes. Red includes an additional mode called Upload and a unit called Riot Shield. Will you see any difference in MP with the DLC. It depends whether you activate RED mode or not (the background becomes red instead of being blue) and you can create Upload matches and matches with Riot Shields. Even if you don't own the DLC someone else can create an Upload match or a match with Riot Shields and challenge you as the opponent.
