Do not bother buying this
I have owned this game for ages and only bought it to play together online with a friend but i have never been able to connect to him hosting the game or him joining my game when i am hosting, it is a well known problem mentioned a lot on this forum, if you are happy playing the single player it is not bad but if you want multiplayer with friends forget it, after all this time the makers of this game must have seen the dissatisfied people that cant play together online with friends posting on forums but they dont care to fix it so my advice is to save your money for a game that does what it is supposed to do with devs that listen and fix the problems their game has.

While some people have reported this problem, they are a minority of users. I have never had an issue connecting with friends online, nor has anyone I know. People host tournaments all the time with this game and it requires connecting with friends to do so and these occur without problems.

That doesn't mean that the problem doesn't exist but the original post makes it sound like it's universal, which it is not. It is in fact rare.

It is not rare, i have owned the game for quite a long time and so has my friend and in all that time we have never been able to connect to each other and if you check this forum there have been a lot of posts describing the same issue.

It's too bad that you and your friend can't connect to each other with this game but that does not make it a common problem. There have been a few posts on this forum that have confirmed it is a problem. There are over a hundred thousand players on steam that play this game. A few posts is not evidence that this is common.

Well i hope that those people that do buy it will be able to connect to their friends but for those that cant it will be a wasted purchase.

Owning the game for a longer period of time doesn't make the problem more likely for other people.

I've never actually heard of this issue, but I'd say the most likely cause is a firewall or other form of network blocking. Are you trying to play from a university or some other place that blocks certain connections? Have you tried opening the correct ports on your router? Do you have any VPN programs like Hamachi running? Are you trying to connect from a country that is not permitted to connect to the Wizards of the Coast servers? Have you attempted to use a proxy?

There are any number of things that can cause connectivity issues, just because you're having issues it doesn't necessarily mean you should be boycotting what is (in my opinion) a very entertaining game. Try working it out, or troubleshooting the problem, then come to the forums listing all the things that don't work. If you do that you can give a much more informed warning to others who may have similar issues, instead of just a blanket "don't buy this game because it doesn't work for me" since that doesn't really help anyone.

As i have already said if you look through the posts on this forum you will se that there have been a lot of posts about the same problem, and no i dont have any connection issues with ports on my router etc and as i am not the only person thats had this problem i think it is informative just to warn other that may want to buy the game that the same problem may effect them, if it doesnt then i am happy for them but people still have the right to know about it,i admit that the title of the post sound a bit melodramatic but it does encourage people to at least read the post after that it is up to them whether they tkae a chance and buy it or not, either way at least they are made aware of it, i dont play from a university i play from home and everyone of my games that have an online function work perfectely. There is no more for me to add, people can buy it or not but at least they are aware of this issue before handing out thier cash, and apparentley the last version of this game had the same problem, there are also plenty of complaints and posts on foums, just do a google search and type in Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 or 2012/2011 cant connect to a frinds online game. I will not be responding to any more replies to this, i have given the information, buy the game at your own risk.

He's not the only one. Other people have this problem too including me, connection fails all the time. It has nothing to do with firewall or VPN. What's causing the problem then? I have no idea but it can't be solved by following general troubleshooting tips... It wasn't like this in the previous MTG versions, i don't know what they did with this one.

I'm just learning the decks in single player at the moment so i wouldn't call it a wasted purchase, i might get mad later when i would like to play online but for now i can't be bothered.
