Step 1) Decide on a version to play, steam comes with its own version but the community has put it upon itself to use a "community patch" which can be obtained here: http://forums.timegate.com/showthread.php?t=23351

Step 2) Enable Port forwarding for the following ports:

3855
17437

The second thing you can do if you're not so savvy is to install a program called Hamachi. With this program anyone in your Hamachi group can host or join games easily.

Step 3) Join Kohan Lords: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/KohanLords so you can find more people to fight!

Thanks you're a lifesaver. I guess since Gamespy and TimeGate went RIP last year they can't host via the Internet. The LAN functionality still works great, and if per your suggestion we used Hamachi to create a Virtual LAN and everything worked like a charm.

As a tip for the non-technical, when you boot up Hamachi have the host create a network. Then the host needs to put his Hamachi IP address, not his local one, into Kohan before he hosts the game. Game type is LAN because you're making a virtual LAN. Meanwhile, your friends join the network you created via Hamachi, and then once the LAN game is created in Kohan they will be able to join it.
