I'm having the same issue.
This seemed to help:

If that link above doesn't help, send me an email at jay@murudai.com, as it might be a bug. There are some issues with the resolution in Linux, but setting to fullscreen mode or using that config file explained in that link should help fix it.

Creating the file did work. Thanks!

Yep you have to create the file itself in this case.

It's 2020 and I decided to try firing this game up again. I think I still have the issue described above. The screen comes up cut off in such a way that I can't see the menu in order to fix it. The link above seems to be dead now so I don't know what file I need to create in order to implement the workaround.

I'm on Ubunto 20.04

@Murudai any chance this will be fixed in such a way that no work around is necessary?

Here's the info from that thread. I just had the same issue. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to help.

Problem: The game shows a black screen, crashes immediately on startup with no message or the resolution is messed up and can't change in the menu.

This could be a resolution issue, the game attempting to set a resolution the display setup doesn't support. There is a way to override the saved settings in the game. Create a notepad file called "display" in the same folder as Solar2.exe (something like Program Files > Steam > steamapps > common > solar 2).

Put in the file exactly this:

Width: 1280
Height: 720
Fullscreen: false

You can set Width and Height to any integer, and Fullscreen to 'true' or 'false'. Just a note though that you can do some weird things with this, especially if you try and set strange custom resolutions in fullscreen mode (as monitors only support certain resolutions in fullscreen).
