its not a clone its just because they're both action games with similar elements (i.e carjacking, guns, gangs). Btw, add me on Steam so we can play.(:
it's not gta you're on free lance contract with other gangs etc in saints row you're fighting to live
The first game I would say was more of a clone, but since Saints Row 2 came out it made itself its own. It stopped being a clone with Saints Row 2.
There are similarities. It might accurate to say that the Saints Row series sometimes parodies GTA, as well as other games.
It's the same genre, a sandbox. It's got a lot of similar elements, and no doubt took inspiration from gta. Yet it is not a clone. It's got a bunch of different elements to gta. For example taking over enemy land. It's got a different style of humour, and a cool fun to follow storyline. And saints row also added quite some new things that GTA afterwards added in their games. For example the improved GPS system. It's unfortunate people see Saints Row 1 and 2 as clones.
SR1 from what I've heard was deep in clone territory. SR2 took a small step out, gradually changing into its own, and by saints row three is said ♥♥♥♥ gradually doing it, heres a dildo. Continuing this terrible metaphoric description, IV decided ♥♥♥♥ everything, we're going to the moon.

I agree.. I don't see how threads are destined to be indirect/direct hate towards (a) group(s), just for what it is.. Saints Row 2 is an amazing game, I honestly loved it back in 2008, and I love it now.
If you played SR1 then you know it was both a parody of GTA and a lot of clone like material that came with it. SR2 has a lot of things that are very similar to GTA San Andreas, but it is very unique. The game world is completely different, and all the activities and mini-games set it completely apart from GTA. I love GTA-SA and still play it to this day, but it is nothing like SR2 in terms of storyline or the things you can do in the game. SR2 is like a giant spoof and farce of GTA-SA, but stands alone in terms of story and all the little things that make it great.

Yes, both games have some similar mini-games like the taxi, ambulance and police missions, but SR2 manages to make them so much more over the top and unique. You also have the stunt jumps, but in SR2 you get to do rolls and flips and add some more crazyness to them.

In terms of overall chaos and sheer insanity Saints Row takes all the cake and beats the crap out of GTA. Gat would kick the crap out of Big Smoke any day. I think the Boss in SR2 would end up killing CJ or else making him his ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Just my thoughts on the matter. I've actually had some major arguments with developers at Rockstar on this exact topic.

I love what my son said one day and it put it into great context. I was telling him about Saints row 3 and discussing upcoming 4....His response was Meh, I'll wait for GTA.... Saints row is too over the top for me (Too over the top he says...the kid that grew up on adult swim lol) .... I looked at him in disbelief..... After all that is the whole piont...it isn't GTA....it's over the top. It's gta on steriods or if it was written by adult swim....

Plus, SR3 actually has the Adult Swim radio station. I freaked out then I first heard it driving with Shaundi to Friendly Fire during We're Going To Need Guns. Two of my favorite things got together and had some nasty lovin' going on. Nothing like hearing the Aqua Teen Hunger Force theme while you're mowing down innocent pedestrians and blasting away at the cops and gangs.

I agree with the unique part of everything that you're saying. But SR2 being a giant spoof of GTA:SA? No. GTA SA was released in 2005, whereas Saints Row 2 was released in 2008. The animations, gameplay overall is way better.
SR1 was the only GTA clone, but it was more of a pardoy.

SR2 while similar to GTA San andreas, the city, peds, cars and pretty much everything is better including the story, it's a fantastic story.

SR3 is the exact opposite of GTA IV and is the biggest pardoy of the SR games, GTA IV was realistic and had a well written story, while SR3 was cartoony, wacky and had a bad predictable story.

SR4 is just SR3 but better in everyway, more fun, better story, more crazy and more rememble then SR3. However it is more similar to Prototype rather then GTA.
