since the question is not exactly clear, my answers are:
do i still play SC:FA? - yes
do i play SC:FA in multiplayer? - no
yes lots - in many places (sheppard this first one is for you. x)

some people play on Forged Alliance Forever (a lobby system with game enhancements)

some people play on Steam (private servers etc.)

Most people play friends on Steam or LAN so you may not see the game or may not be invited.

The best way is to find some friends who play and make your own decision where and how to play. IF you are wondering where is GPGNET and the Vault? They shut down.

But the game lives on
I usually play offline against SorianAIX,but the community indeed lives on :)
We still enjoy a good few team human versus team SorianAiX battles too.

It also matters what mods and maps you have installed if you want to join other peoples games.

We tend to use Sorian 2.1.2, Blackops Icon support, Experimental Shields 1.2 and 'nothing but time' mod and my maps designed for different gameplay styles (google sykoste map pack)

One or two of the the maps will cause the AI to moan about no AI markers - this is deliberate on maps that are complex as they perform better without (leave the AI on adaptive) and the game runs quicker.

I love Forged Alliance Forever Zepilot is awesome for creating the lobby and now Galactic War!
I am going to assume your a new players or someone interested in buying the game.
As others have said, there are many people who play.

From my experience steam is the easiest to get started, the games tends to be friendlier and casual. The downside is it is a smaller community which is fragmented.

FAF has MUCH better community support (Tutorials, casts, chat, torneys etc), more players online at a better ability (in general).
The downside to this is that some people (a minority) are a bit ranking obsessed, and can be quite rude and dismissive towards lower ranked/ability players.

I play both, I would highly recommend any new player to try both see which suites them.

To get started run thought the in game tutorial and a few campaign missions/compstomps.
Multiplayer has a steep learning curve. Talk to people and ask for advice/practice games, you will find most people, in both communities, to be helpful and friendly. Watch replays and practice!

Take a look at these, they are a helpful for new players.

I play online with my friends via the built-in online with the steam version of FA. Works fine, FA introduces game balance changes and a larger but in general more hostile community. Then again look at Starcraft 2, haha if that's not a hostile online community. RTS's in general get that.
