One, default UI grinds to a crawl - Sorian AI pack (a mod) alleviates that a bit.

Two, bad memory management. While i have not had SCFA crash on me, the original SupCom invariably does after a while, indicative of a leak or just really bad memory management.
In SC that crash could be prevented by saving and then loading from that save, at regular intervals.

Like a fragmented harddrive, a fragmented heap makes the memory manager (in this case SHSMP.DLL) have to work overtime to handle the requests.
And CS/SCFA seems to make a ton of those.

It is worth noting that while SupCom and SCFA both come with SHSMP.DLL "SmartHeap" 8.0.0.19 (same version in both games), only SCFA also comes with SHW32D.DLL "Debug Smartheap". Seems it was necessary to use that debugging module to let SCFA work around reason for the inevitable crashed that plagued SupCom.

Does this slowdown only happen when zoomed in or also in strategic view?

the zoom has NOTHING to do with it. it is the units it has to process.

I am considering getting the game, is it still playable with such a severe slowdown on bigger maps? or would you not recommend it.

the slowdown happens when there are tons of units. it is only common in comp stomps against regular AI. sometimes it lags in pvp games but that is usually when the game lasts over 45 minutes and someone doesn't have a very good pc. there is a slow down on bigger maps BUT that is because you need more units to have the map control and not the map size.

CoreMaximizer
is a somewhat debatably functional tool that aims to allow multi-threading of SC, SCFA.
Many argue that it doesn't work for Reasons.
Many argue that it does work since Evidence.
I recommend that more people try this with open minds so that we can get much clearer results as to whether it truly works. Each person should get it and try it for themselves.
It may just work for you. If it does, prepare for some debates ;)

I tried it before and the game still runs on 1 core. The only thing that helps the late game slow downs is a high clocked cpu.
