Best way to setup controls?

Honestly this is my biggest gripe with this game and I'm having a very unenjoyable time playing this game because of the controls both keyboard and gamepad.

My issue is that I see the game wants to be a free flowing shoot em up ala gunstar heroes where I can shoot in all directions BUT at the same time it NEEDS me to play this game as a platformer requiring me to use the actual buttons. So this puts me in a ♥♥♥♥ situation. Either I use the pad and use the buttons and be forced to move whenever I want to shoot OR I use the joystick to shoot the direction I want and NOT be able to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ jump or dash or anything else but walk because my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ right thumb is too busy shooting and I don't have three more thumbs to press any of the other buttons.

Honestly I'm just ready to call this a ♥♥♥♥ game because of the terrible design choice when it comes to controls because the level design and what the devs want me to do is in such great conflict.
