So I just finished playing Hydrophobia. Here's some thoughts.
Flow and mood are excellent. The scenes were well-directed.
Puzzle-solving was... it would have been good but there was a lot of hand-holding; you basically follow a carrot on a stick through the whole game, which feels largely on rails.
They sold the game based on the idea that you'd have cool hydrokinesis powers, but you only have them for the last 15% of the game if that.
The hydrokinesis is cludgy to control and not all that useful. You can't use it from cover and it's less powerful as a weapon than the sonic stun bullets you use for the other 85% of the game.
You also get real bullets but they suck so I never really used them. The sonic rounds have more stopping power and accuracy so why would I use semiauto or fullauto?
There's some stealth for about 5 minutes but you end up shooting everyone in the face anyway.
After the game ends you unlock a "challenge room" but I don't care.
There is one boss fight, a robot gun thing. When you kill it, the antagonist gets electrocuted, you cure your water-power poisoning, and then it fades to black, roll credits.
You never get the deeper explanation of the conflict, just "crazy cult wants to cull humans". you never meet up with your pal who helped you through the first 75% of the game over the radio.
I'm glad I played it. I'm also glad I got it on sale.
I want more in the world of the game but I know it won't happen.
