Very generic story nowadays with your character waking up in a post apocalyptic wasteland, going against "The Authority". The influence from Fallout and other similar games is readily apparent. However playing this game, as with most ID software games, for the story isn't the point! The weapons are fun, sound good, and I like the different ammo/things you can craft to aid in killing things. Although some of the textures in game can be messy, the facial animations and attention to detail there is quite good. Would recommend this game when it goes on sale with the Scorcher's DLC. For approx $5, great deal for the amount of content. Not the most amazing game, but fun for fans of the FPS genre.
I just beat the game a few minutes ago and my first initial reaction was...was that it? I beat the game and most side quests in about 12 hours and was left feeling like the game ended in act 2 when it should have had at least 4 acts, if that makes any sense. This review contains minor spoilers.
Overall storyline was a 5 out of 10. Definitely a fail. I didn't feel invested to any of the characters or even the faction I was fighting for, the Resistence.
Vehicle Combat again a 5 out of 10. It was horrible but it wasn't overly fun. Very basic driving, and it felt like a mechanic that was added to the game just for a bit of filler.
Ground Combat 7 out of 10. The game does a bit better here. At times the combat turned towards a very Serious Sam type feel as hordes of enemies bear down on you, which I've never been crazy about. The AI of the combat is poor and the only challenging parts of the ground combat was when they put hordes of enemy against you in a very close room, otherwise all other enemies could be fought every easily by simly moving backwards and having the enemies come to you.
Weapons 7 out of 10. Very basic weapons. The upgrades for the weapons were nice but not enough of them. The customized ammo was a nice addition but I felt like their could have big a bigger variety instead of just more powerful bullets (essentially). No weapon in particular stuck out as being really cool. They do have a mind control weapon but IMO they messed it up and it's not very fun with limited effectiveness.
Quests 6 out of 10. The have a very repetetive feel to it. Quests didn't endear me towards certain characters.
Graphics 6-7 out of 10. When you think of this game, think Borderlands Graphics. Everything looks semi-painted on the screen and while I wouldn't give Borderlands a lower rating I would this game. Borderlands has a very unique atmosphere, it has some very beatiful landscapes that add a sense of mystery to the game. Rage for all it's painted landscapes doesn't offer anything really unique. And because effort wasn't put into making this stand out with interesting textures it gets a lower rating.
Other thoughts The game is incredibly linear. If you want to explore a new area, you pretty much need to quest to be able to interact with the environment. The game feels very similar to Borderlands without the funny jokes or interesting landscapes. Overall the game felt rushed, linear and very short. Overall I'd rate the game a generous 6 out of 10.
