They come in handy. You can find weapons in one them. If you go to tunnels unser Dans place you will find an assult rifle there. I usually go ater the medical supplies mission because I'll have a shotgun after that. Mutioes are easy to kill with a shotgun. Going it with just the pistol is fairly hard. You have to be an expert shot and hit the head often or else it taks several shots to kill a mutie. They can overwhelm you by then. It's easier with a shotgun so see Rikter before going down there.
Then there's the scorcher threat. You can find a rocket launcher when you do that one. It's needed for the mission.
If you love playing mutant bash then the Ticket to oasis is just what you want. Awsomw mutant action there.

I tend to use my fists on muties, it saves ammo and I usally sell all of the pistol ammo even before I go to the ghost hideout at the start.
