Dead Island is an action game where you take the role of your choice of 4 survivors of a deadly plague that has swept through the island of Banoi. It sounds interesting, a plot that seems to convey the pressure of a threat you need to escape. It, however, is executed badly.
The game, for starters, is only technically an RPG. It lacks several RPG components and any that are in the game are done poorly. This game feels like it has a story at the calibre of Call of Duty. It's littered with fetch quests and something that should immediately turn you off buying this game- No save option. Reloading a checkpoint doesn't even really work. Why do you reset a checkpoint? You do it because you messed up, but no, the game practically stays the same, nothing is reset except quest progress.
The game, however is visually stunning. The glare and motion blur seamlessly blend and make for a great visual expirience if your PC can run the game with those settings.
The gameplay is boring and repetitive and is comprised mostly of basic fetch quests disguised behind a thin veil of interesting back story and the hope the next quest will be interesting. For example, something as interesting as "Please retrieve this key in order to do this thing to advance the plot" sounds like something that could end up being interesting but morphs into killing several easy zombies only to kill a massive one and take the key. Alternatively, it could continue the boring trend by having you fight massive hoards of the undead only to retrieve the key from nothing, no boss, nothing.
This lack of pacing, interest or even adequete RPG components reluctantly leads me to say that you shouldn't purchase this game.
