The world is beautiful and well constructed, and I (sorta) enjoyed going through the different phases of the game.
However, once the soon-forgotten aesthetics of the game are pushed aside, Almost every other aspect of the game is bland, and the real horror in this horror game is the horrifying voice acting. In many ways it reminds of the npcs in Far Cry 3 =/
The combat is strategic enough (for what increasingly feels like mindlessly slashing through a wave of meat with that new ridiculous weapon you just made) but sometimes feels cheap and too simple, and gets old really fast (even with Sam B's extremely fun ramming ability).
The story is BLEH. Ok maybe I was a little interested in the ending which in my opinion was hilarious and f****** stupid. But all the characters are not really interesting and you really don't ever feel any connection to them. Their different backstories rarely go past the few paragraphs you see when choosing a character, and I think that the total lack of any form of character customization and clothing options really did it in for me. I didn't expect to trudge through the sandy and hot beaches to the mirky and filthy city streets and sewers and finally through a bloody southeast asian jungle in a tight concierge skirt and ♥♥♥♥ing high heels. All while my red scarf stays perfectly put, casually sat round my neck and firm as my fake chinese accent.
If you're looking for a mysterious open world RPG with many interesting places to explore and people to meet on any scale even remotely close to Fallout 3 or ♥♥♥♥ing BORDERLANDS 2, it ain't here.
