This post has been updated with a fix that works for all USB 7.1 headsets
===============================================================
Waiting for a patch is pointless its not happening ever
The problem is nasty scratchy audio with pops and crackles with Logitech G35 / G930 headset
Yes i have tried all other fixes on these forums todate some seem silly some make sense none of them work 100% and sometimes the problem seems random just restarting your game 20times might work.
what works 100% for me and others i know that are playing this game = installing older drivers for the headset b4 Logitech tried to make changes and incorporate all devices under the one interface the nasty an much hatted LGS
The particular driver im using is g930_100364b_x64.exe on windows 7x64 ultimate
This audio driver is working 100% never fails you can find it here ftp://ftp.logitech.com/pub/techsupport/headsets/g930_100364b_x64.exe
or the 32bit version here
ftp://ftp.logitech.com/pub/techsupport/headsets/g930_100364b.exe
if you require older versions still try here
http://www.mmnt.net/db/0/0/ftp.logitech.com/pub/techsupport/headsets (the ones with a J in thier name are Japanese lang versions i wouldnt install these unless you can read ♥♥♥)
some of you maybe using multiple logitech devices as i do such as keyboard / mouse / wheel & headset i can still use my mouse and g keys by installing the old setpoint and not the LGS software
I have now tested this on 2 of my own PC's and i have freinds who have done the same its working for us so i figured id share with you.
we are running both
AMD and Intel CPU's
Nvidia and ATi GPU's
Sorry i cant help other branded USB headset users problems maybe you could try some older drivers and see if you can achive similar results
This may or maynot work its been found that this audio bug still persists and is actualy somewhat random you change settings and think you have fixed it but infact it comes back next time you launch the game maybe

Below is 100% working fix not just for Logitech g35 / g930 this will work for evey one

Thanks Max for this great Idea i can Confirm its 100% on the money

Hey guys,
I did have the same issue and I tried all the fixes listed in here and some other forums.
Neither of them worked for my machine, but I DID find a workaround.
Here is what you have to do:
1) Download Virtual Audio Cable from the trusted source of your choice and install the program.
2) When installed open up the Control Panel and add one Virtual Line
3) After adding the line go to your Window Sound Settings under Playback and Microphone and activate "LINE 1". In Playback you also set "LINE 1" as your default playback device (Right click -> Set as Default device)
4) Under your Microphone Settings Right-Click the "LINE 1" and go to the properties. In there go to Tab "Listen" and set the option "Listen to that Playback Source" (Might be called differently, since I'm not on an english system atm) and select your headset within the dropdown menu.
For me this is "Speaker (Logitech G35 Headset)". Click Apply
5) If everything worked fine you should see the graphical equalizer go up and down as soon as you play any sound from any application. So go ahead and test it with a media player. I did this with Spotify. What actually happens is, that Spotify uses Line 1 as Default Device and since you said ok I wanna hear everything that comes to Line 1 over my Headphones you should hear everything normally. Dead Island will send its sound to Line1, too from now on and since Line1 is just a stereo device there shouldn't be an issue as where Dead Island wants to send 7.1 sound to the Logitechs G35. This is why the error occurs in the first place. The Logitech G35 isn't a real sorround headset, it just simulates the surround sound but stating in Windows it can handle 7.1.
The fix worked for me. Hopefully it does for everyone else in here.
If somethings not clear about VAC just see this post:
http://blog.hemp-society.de/2013/02/how-to-exclude-any-audio-off-your_4.html
That's how I set up my VAC except for the fact, that I just used ONE VAC Line not three as listed in the post.
Cheers Mates and Have Fun giving those zombies that they deserve

Absolutely brilliant :D
i am also running LGS version 8.00.127 (without the G930 integration)
I've been so close to getting this game many times but having read about the incompatibility of my G35 with it, I was always wary of wasting my cash. Now, having seen this I took the plunge and bought it. Sure enough, terrible crackling and popping audio when I first booted up. I uninstalled LGS and the existing G35 driver and then installed the one in the OP's post.
Sound bugs totally gone. Thanks for the info Donkyboy!
I tried the older G35 specific drivers but the crackling was still there, I tried the latest version of LGS, (which actually has a profile for Dead Island!), and the crackling was still there.
Just as I was beginning to think I'd have to use the Windows default G35 drivers, I found another post about deleting the contents of the 'Audio.scr' file in Documents and making it read only. This really did fix it. Got zero crackling so far, proper bass in the headset and running current LGS.
The post in question is http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2773026
good to see these forums being used for good and usefull information and players helping each other.
.
I already used g930_100364b_x64.exe as the LGS crap caused some problems with the mic activation.
Reinstalling g930_100364b_x64.exe made the scratchy noises even worse.
Now I am trying to do it the way, someone showed in Mallory's link.
So far no luck with the empty "Audio.scr" file. Still trying.
Weird, huh?
I tried the
Title: Logitech Gaming Software
Software Version: 8.40.83
Post Date: 5-DEC-2012
Platform: Windows 7
File Size: 58 Mb
Multilingual x64
On Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition and recived the same nasty crackles n pops.
These are the latest drivers for this headset.
Did you try you game again after you found it to be working as this problem does randomly dissapear sometimes only to reapper in a couple of hours or after a game restart.
I almost want to blame Logitech and thier drivers but im unsure about this as i have tried to trun the game with out any Logitech drivers installed and its still nasty, I donot belive that this problem will ever 100% go away unless we put away our USB headsets and plug in some old anologe ones.
Unfortunate as this maybe for those that do not have any and have yet to play this game waiting for support and a patch that will never come.
some of you may find that a cheapo set of headphones is the only answer its sad i know but remember this b4 you buy games to cheak the forums for problems to avoid problems like this.
Hell even thou this game has these problems once you get rid of them what ever whay works for you its a great game very enjoyable.
Then the problem came back in some other form.
There are no crackling noises or so.
Zombies that are to your right side or behind you scream like 10 times louder.
Jesus, this scares the crap out of me. The noises were not so annoying.
I just gave up with it as its no longer supported (Like it ever was lmfao what a joke) it also cant run on multiple screens proplerly with out missing certain game elements out.
Basicaly for me on my system its unplayable and they think they can get us to part with another $100 for the sequel especialy when they wouldnt even support it in thier own forums hell they dont even acknoledge its existance yeah ill give them more money.
yeah its been mention many times the sound bug with this game does not always raise its ugly head.
run it again tomorrow and it will be back
and guess what I have the same problems as i did with G35 and G930 hmmmm they tell us that the problem with these logitech headsets is that they are USB and not real but fake surround.
Well The Razor Tiamat and Asus Xonar DSX are not fake they are genuine 7.1 so it appears it is actualy the game that has problems.
SOLUTION
=========
Open file
C:\Users\***USERNAME***\Documents\DeadIsland\out\Settings\Audio.scr
With a text editor such as notepad (I use Notepad++)
1.Change
API("XAudio2")
to
API("aDS3D")
2.Add
UseEAX()
on the line after
Quality3D("high")
3. Make sure you set the
MixFrequency(44100)
tothe same frequency of your headset
MixFrequency(48000)
worked great for me as this is what my headset is set to.
4.Save the file
5.Play the game and enjoy
Note that this fix is for the Razer Tiamat Elite True 7.1 but it may work for others. (no it didnot work for the Logitech G35 or G930 please use other fixes already posted here that sometimes / kinda work)
