Anomaly Warzone Earth

Anomaly Warzone Earth

Game freezes GUI (linux)
The intros play back fine but when it's supposed to show the menu a small part of the menu slides in and afterwards the gui freezes completely (music is still present). Cannot even switch to the terminal consoles. Only rebooting through ssh solves the problem.

AMD 5850 with driver 12.8 on a dual screen setup with KDE.

I'm having the same thing with Ubuntu 12.10 AMD Radeon HD5450 & the 13.1 drivers, it's also happening with the non-Steam Linux version, GUI totally freezes & only a hard boot gets me back on my system.
Have AMD APU E-450 (Radeon HD 6400M) and 13.1 driver version on Ubuntu Quantal. The white game mouse cursor appears after intro upon totally black screen, can move it for a few minutes, then it freezes (while music is still playing). ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-alt-backspace and similar don't cause any effect, sysrq+reisub works.

this problem is caused by the AMD drivers, i guess that you're using the Amd64 version of ubuntu, i had the same problem using the game provided by Ubuntu Software Center... the game works using the AMD propietary drivers provided by ubuntu, but other games of steam doesn't work with that older driver.
I don't want to install the old drivers. I guess it's a waiting game to see when the game doesn't freeze. I too, like to live dangerously.
I have a similar problem with Linux Mint 13 LTS, Radeon HD 6290, 13.1 drivers. The menu doesn't show at all. I can see a few pixels on the right hand side and the mouse cursor while the music plays. Sometimes dropping to console and then going back to X helps so I tried that, to no avail.
Tried drivers 13.2 and 12.10 and neither of them worked either.
i have same issue with nvidia 8400GS ubuntu 12.04
Same issue with Arch64 and the proprietary AMD drivers. Screen goes black except for a few pixels on the middle of the right edge, music keeps going, and top indicates that the X server uses 100% cpu.
I had to hard reboot my pc to get out of this.
I can confirm it's happening here too. After the intro = black screen + mouse cursor + music + random pixels in right side of screen. Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits + Radeon HD 5850
The same problems, Linux MINT 14 XFCE 32 bit, Radeon 6300M with latest driver.
As for now, there are 3 games that are crashing-because-of-drivers in my list. Those are: Cubemen, Spectraball and Anomaly Warzone Earth. At least the first two crash to the desktop peacefully w/o tampering system functionality. Will use 'em as a crash detector when next driver (newer than 13.2 Beta) comes out :)

Is anyone using the Open Source drivers?
Yeah, I use them at my workplace on a workstation with Debian Squeeze. Solid as a rock :)
Good enough to play not-so-demanding games such as Super Meatboy, Neverball, 3D Majhong etc. But, they are plainly not enough to run something more demanding - those simply won't run or run with considerable artifacts. Plus, open source drivers do not support hardware HD video playback yet. When attempting to run 1080p videos on those drivers HD video becomes HD slideshow with 100% CPU usage and temp. way beyond normal :)
Same problems under openSUSE with fglrx 13.1. Intro runs but then.....total freeze.

Well in that case I won't even try them, I thought it might help but from what you say it would make things 100% worse.
