Yeah, this is happening to me too. Typing the same thing exactly as it is but says invalid as well.

ok the answer is: even if you still had DOOM3BFGedition on steam and installed:
its not enough to download the resurrection of evil and only start it.
you also have to download the new "doom3" game file. its very short if you have installed the old doom 3. (seems its only the cdkey. downloaded 1 sec)
then you start this doom 3 new game. it will start without asking for cd key.
from here you can click on mods and resurrection of evil will show up.
i clicked it and roe started. from now on you also can start roe directly from game list in steam without the cd key question..

This is not the answer. Doom 3 doesn't even launch on steam and just gets stuck on updating product key without launching
