Prologue of the story - The year is 2145. You are an unknown marine sent to a Mars station to reinforce the troops stationed there. Recently there have been many occupants becoming ill and even dying. On board your flight is a councillor from earth to investigate the recent happenings. You are required to grab your equipment and report for duty. This is where your hellish story begins.
This game was released in 2004 and naturally, the graphics look dated. Some aspects are in HD like interactive computer monitors but most of the decals are very pixelated including your weapons which is a shame. The sound is above average with reasonable voice acting but the guns definately needed to sound like they have a heavier punch.
There is a variety of weapons from chainsaws, chainguns, rocket launchers, granades and everything in between to put to good use against the enemy. If you search out the nooks and crannies you will find enough ammunition to keep you going. The AI are generally stupid and will persue you except for the marines. Sometimes they take cover.
The story is slowly revealed to you through a bunch of PDAs the lab scientists have dropped. Not only do they reveal story plots but some will also have codes to gain access to storage lockers. Another cool aspect was having to go outside the station with a limited oxygen supply. It gives a real sense of dread of suffication. To add to the suspense you must lower your weapon to use a flash light. Some will find this a nuisanse if they just want a plain run and gun game.
Conclusion : Don't expect epic content from this game but if you'd like to take a crack at a classic then this would definately count.
Other notes : I had problems choosing a higher resolution to play the game in. It would always crash when I chose which one I wanted. Please check the guides for a work around to get better resolutions. It involves typing commands into the console. Unfortunately you have to do this everytime you open the game. I have a G15 keyboard so I bound the commands to one of my macro keys. Minimised the annoyance.
