When John Romero moved on to work on his new Diakatana game. id Software just went on to ♥♥♥♥ more spin-off's of Quake and re-invent it a few times and make it more multiplayer focused. Not really pleased with the way it all turned out, John Carmack decided to reboot the franchise that really turned id Software into a freaking rich company that it is today! (But he sold out to Bethesda long before I made this review so that's old news..)
He decided to remake Doom in a real dark and edgy setting with cramped corridors, guns reloading, rather boring forggettable characters who just die anyway and it all takes place on Mars. What came out was a somewhat okay horror shooter game. But the Quake fanboys and Doom lovers went "meh" and that's that. So in the end it wasn't really all that big of a game. But hey, I guess you can't really make one hit wonders without putting your future on the line can you id Software? Try not to mess up Doom 4 alright?...
7/10 - Real time shadows and the way everything was setup wasn't half bad.
(This also counts for Resurrection of Evil Expansion!)
