Doom 3. What can be said about Doom 3? It's the third game in a long line of games that helped revolutionize the FPS genre. It's also the game that came out around the same time as Half-Life 2, as well as deviating from the run and gun playstyle from the first two, instead opting for a more horror survival gameplay and making lighting a central theme around it as well, has it aged well?
I'd say yes. I think the initial disappointment from a lot of fans came as a result of this game not being the same as the first two, and honestly, in my opinion, I don't think that's a bad thing at all. It's a slower paced game than its predecessors that's for sure, fleshing out its story and narrative through ingame cutscenes and chracter's PDA's, similar to what modern games nowadays are doing... think like BioShock. A lot of people also had complaints with the flashlight system, which is (imo) what lends to the tension you feel throughout the whole game. If you have issues with that however, there's mods, as well the BFG edition which remedies this (which also brightens up some textures from my understanding), but in my opinion that takes away from the atmosphere they were going for in this game. They consciously made the design choice of making you choose between having your gun out, or your flashlight out to scout the darkness, the light giving you a sense of comfort while also leaving you completely defenseless while doing so. Granted, there are some moments when certain enemies will cheaply spawn behind you, or in complete darkness.
The game is also a lot longer than I remember it being, its single player campaign clocking in at around 10-15 hours, depending on how you approach things, although to be fair, I think the game starts off kind of slow, easing the player into the narrative before all hell breaks loose. The latter half of the game being very action packed moreso than the beginning. I think this game was ahead of its time, and I feel it's not as fondly remembered as HL2, but I still think it's a great experience, and one of the last Doom games to be developed by the original id team, before the license was shipped over to Bethesda, definitely an end of an era.
Closing out, I have to say I played through it with a graphics mod, to bring the graphics up to date a bit, there's several of them out there but the one I installed was Doom 3 Redux, you can find it among others over on the moddb site.
I highly recommend to fans of survival horrors, and first person shooters. One of the better titles that came out during that era. Would definitely suggest playing it with an HD texture pack as well, the game holds up suprisingly well when using them.
So I rebought Doom 3. Why? I could'nt remember why I didnt finish it back in the day. Now I've played it I remember the horror. Not the demon related kind, but the kind derived from poor game design choices.
The core "combat" experience is just a series of sucker punches as enemies spring in your face as you open a door followed by enemies spawning behind you, this doesnt create a sense of dread rather extreme irratation as it happens over and over and over. The gun play is woeful, with none of the guns sounding or behaving like powerful weapons. Couple this with your cross hair flying off as you are hit, it's like they confused annoying and challenging.
The lighting is cool and the music is fitting but Doom 3 will be more remebered for its technical innovations rather than it's gameplay. And saying that these are all fairly standard now that leaves me no reason to recommend Doom 3 anymore.
This game is still one of my favorite action/horror game of all time. I remember being so scared to play this game when I was very young, and the game kind of still scares me a bit. Doom 3 is a 10/10 game!!!
