Personally I like doom 3 alot because it's PC design focus shows and gives it the freedom that modern fps forexample don't have. Realtime in-game dynamic GUI cursors, gameplay without regenerating health, no weaponlimit, no aimdownsights, no sprint (classic run, stamina based), actual secrets to find, no over focus on story, support for moding with radiant based DoomEdit.
Technically, vanilla Doom III didn't age well, you will have to set screen resolution and ratio via console commands and edit autoexec.cfg to set graphics at something, other than minimal (editing them in main menu will not help). Also problem with CD key is possible. Personally, I didn't encounter the last one, moreover, a lot of people on steam forums seem to have it solved.
Doom III from BFG edition don't have these problems, but balance and atmosphere were ruined for sake of making it much easier (it was also released on consoles).
There's some info about it for now.
...if your comp can do it , grab redux mod + Sikkmod , reznor sounds and your good to go.
the UAC facility is gorgeous and to this day i still find its setting hard to beat.
Turn the lights off , chuck on the head phones , grab a spare pair of jocks and enjoy !!
