They're horrid.

I personally find Spear of Destiny is worth it for the id episode by itself.

Why don't you like them, Calavera? I haven't played through them yet but I did try the first level of Return to Danger and found it to be unique and challenging. It's interesting how they start you off in a sewer maze full of dogs and all you have to use is your knife and pistol with just eight shots. You can exit the sewers quickly if you just move straight ahead from your starting position, but when you enter the facility/base it is absolutely full of guards and you're more or less forced to blow them away and survive off the ammunition they drop because health and ammo pickups seem to be quite rare as opposed to the rather generous portions found in the original id Software episodes.

I'm not sure I agree that it sucks, at least not the first level I'm referencing, but it's certainly different both in terms of level design and how it looks and sounds. I can't say I'm a fan of the brand new sprites. The pistol, given its bright blue color, looks more like a water pistol and there's something silly about bright green guards that drop absurdly large, bright blue magazines upon dying.

Hey Chubz

First, I dislike the new sprites and textures. For some reason, the color palette is horribly blue. It gets really annoying.

Second, The level design gets incredibly uninspired/annoying later on. You'll navigate these endless mazes that will drive you insane.

Third, the dogs, why does it seem as they are wearing turtlenecks?

And that's really it. The art is dull and the level design is horrible.

PS I like your Doombuilder tutorials, good stuff!

Spear of Destiny, the ID software title is incredible though. You should play that one if you didn't.

Yeah, if you've played the mission packs all the way through you'll probably agree with the statement that the first one is the best since half of the levels can be skipped. :P The level design is really awful in them overall. It may not seem bad at first, but give it time.

Is there any way to play them without the new graphics?

The propaganda = points replacement wasn't bad, actually; it made way more sense than the original's treasure pickups. But the wall textures especially are just awful.

You could probably replace the new textures by the old ones. Still it's the level design that made me stop playing them.

I even made it possible to use both sets of resources simultaneously in ECWolf since most of the graphics aren't all that bad. The level design, however, is quite horrible.

Honestly, even Spear of Destiny is not very inspired (I found it pretty similar to Wolf3D episode 6, which is my least favorite).
But yeah, the two mission packs are awful.

Ultimate Challenge is pretty good, but Return To Danger sucks nuts.

I agree, UC is not that bad (except floor 5).
