I hope you're not overclocking!

The same thing happens to me. It sometimes works fine and others it will just crash and Windows does not say why just taht a problem happened and it had to shut down. I've tried both my Asus Turbo33 on and off and it still happens

I have an Nvidia 660, so no reason to overclock Civ. Civ has cool graphics, but I don't think overclocking really goes much for it.

I think you need a better video card. I think its supposed to 8600? or somthing higher than 7770. Look at the system requirements. And look at the reccomended no minimal. Also, if its vanilla then I think it used 2.8? of RAM(so probably four) and for G&K it runs at about 3.2 GB so check that. I still have problems too. I recently upgraded my cpu so now it recovers after the display fails.
And do minimal graphics for everything. Only real noticable is the clouds vs the hexes. And turn down the leader display to minimal as well. In MP you don't even get the screen

what directx are you using to start up the game? because i have had a similar problem running it on directx 10/11 and used directx 9 instead and it worked perfectly fine

And if none of that works delete civ and redownload it.

update everything: directX verdict86 game for windows center drivers (do a driver sweep if you have different branded card installed before)
Or maybe it's just a AMD problem, my gtx 260 SLI never have those problems... I will try play using HD6990 and get back to ya

Up until recently, I was running an old HD Radeon 4600. That's worse than the OP's card, but I could still run civ 5 with it. So I doubt the card is the issue.

We're working on similar issues in the discussion " Game Crashes " -- a couple of possible solutions have been posted...
