Random is fun.
2 points:
-What is too long for you? cause spending days farming in RPGs seems like a chore for me and therefore I find the time veryyyyyy long when I'm doing it(special mention for wow vanilla/BC when back in the days nearly disguted me of RPG... almost, thks to Diablo 2). A 6 hours non consecutive game doesn`t seems that long for me, finishing Borderlands 2 or any triple A title is in my opinion longer than that.
Bottome line:matter of taste
-What kindof game are you talking about?
Duel map game? I can beat it in under 30minutes if my opponent sucks
Gigantic map with at least 14 others players? yeah can take a while and have its flats moments sure...
In both case, you don't have to finish it in a row.
There's few ways to speed up the game a bit:
fast movements, combats
be acustomed to shorcuts
predifined strategy and habits
few mods for better UI
So I guess, the more you enjoy the game, the shorter your games will be :)
and well.. about the second, kinda the same thing as I said about the first point, I usually play either with 12 or 20 civs cause I like the massive chaos in a game.
It's not that bad, nobody like biking and see that nasty sun, isn't it? :P
