It has a huge replay value. Every game is different. Unlike other games that once your done the main story you put it down. Civilization games you can get tired of, but come back later and get right back into it.

Pretty much this. You keep coming back for another match, there's a lot to do, a lot to try and it's always fun and engaging.

It's quite a complex game without being difficult to play. Going through your turns is so easy since you can't actually get to the 'end turn' button until you've sorted out all the things which require attention.

However it still has a lot of depth once you learn all the ins and outs of what's going on behind the scenes. Games which require me to focus more I don't play as much since they require effort, Civ is so relaxing to play.

Then add in the whole building up thing, lots of popular games involving building your town/kingdom/empire etc but Civ has such an epic time frame and massive difference between the start and finish it really taps into that sense of achievement (i.e cavemen to a space station)

The random maps, multiple different map types and a load of different civs which only a selection will be in any one game give it great replayability.

The graphics look nice so it's not even one of those games thag has good game play but bad graphics.

So basically it taps into multiple things that make a good game and puts them togethr in an easy to play but harder to master format, it's the recipe for a game that has the player numbers you speak of.

It offers what 4x games (and a few other genres) do best: the chance to build something unique. Every game plays out differently, telling its own little story, and I often find myself simply admiring my cities at the end of a game.

whats 4x?

The term "4X" originates from a 1993 preview of Master of Orion in Computer Gaming World by Alan Emrich, in which he rated the game "XXXX" as a pun on the XXX rating for pornography. The four Xs were an abbreviation for "EXplore, EXpand, EXploit and EXterminate".[1] Other game commentators adopted the "4X" label to describe a game genre with specific gameplay conventions:[2]

Explore means players send scouts across a map to reveal surrounding territories.

Expand means players claim new territory by creating new settlements, or sometimes by extending the influence of existing settlements.

Exploit means players gather and use resources in areas they control, and improve the efficiency of that usage.

Exterminate means attacking and eliminating rival players. Since in some games all territory is eventually claimed, eliminating a rival's presence may be the only way to achieve further expansion.

These four elements of gameplay have been described as the four phases of a 4X game session.[3] These phases often overlap with each other and vary in length depending on the game design...

The true Civ V question being: are you ready to sacrifice 500 hours of your life for nothing but a game, like I was?
If yes, then this is the best one...

Over 7000 hours of Pokemon in my life, casual.

Civ V is simple enough to get into and have casual "mess around" fun but deep enough to have some really serious and meaningful games. Also if you're like me and love historical and alternate history based stories, the game has a great "making your own story" aspect that can really keep you motivated.
