Similar tactical RPG / squad based combat games?
So far I have only seen similar isometric strategic gameplay in:

Syndicate Wars (NOT the new FPS)
Commandos
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of steel
Neverwinternights 1 (wich also has the 'pause' option for strategic purposes)

Any other games I should know of? And what is this genre called anyway?

Much like Commandos I recommend Desperados. And if you find it anywhere, try "Korea - Forgotten Conflict"
Doctor Impossible 2012 12 月 31 @ 9:03上午
There's also the new XCOM.

Maybe Mech Commander, Incubation

It´s strange, but the game series that gave me a similar feeling than FF is the Star Wolves one. I know, I know, space 3d and all that stuff... But, the little wild squad system has a similar taste to me.

Silent Storm! It's turn-based though, this one's real-time with pause button, right? But damn, Silent Storm was a good game. Destructible environment and everything. ;)

XCOM seems allright, played the demo. Even though it is turn-based instead of a real-time / pause for tactics blend.

Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II would be earlier examples than this (unfortunately, not on Steam, try gog.com - that's where I recently picked them up for a bit of high-quality nostalgia).
A bit less tactical (more action-y) but very much the same comic-book flavour squad-based combat as Freedom Force is X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse (the first X-Men Legends was console only), I believe Marvel Ultimate Alliance was much the same as X-Men Legends too, but can't recommend it from personal experience. Unfortunately don't know where to get them these days, not in downloadable form anyway.
As for what to call it - I thought Freedom Force was just a RPG - pretty much vanilla flavoured too, since most (non-action) RPGs have some tactical element to their fights unless you want to die pretty fast. Some of the others on your list do sit right on the RPG/Strategy Games border, though.

I wouldn't call Freedom Force an RPG - there's no "role playing" element to it. You don't make choices at any point that affect or change the outcome of the story; your choices are strictly tactical ones about who to bring to a mission and how to grow their powers. I'd call it a tactical squad-based strategy game with progression elements.

try jagged alliance 2, its one of the best squad level tactical combat simulations ever made.

If Neverwinter Nights counts, then Neverwinter Nights 2 should too, especially since you get a larger party and can actually issue commands to all of your party members, instead of just the main one. Also, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 use the same combat system as well, and all of those except DA2 let you have an Isometric view if you want one.

Thanks for the suggestions. I prefer Neverwinter Nights over NwN2 since it has the "pause" option I prefer, similar to Freedom Force and it's sequels. Just was rather disappointed this feature was stripped from Neverwinter Nights 2. And the funny thing is, there is actually a remake for Syndicate Wars in production, called Satellite Reign in Greenlight / Kickstarter project from the original designers. So I'll just keep a lookout for that one too.

Neverwinter Nights 2 HAS the "pause" option. It was never stripped.

Ya nwn 2 does have pause and if you like that feature try out the dragon ages. Xcom enemy unknown is really good too but it's turn based.
Grincer 2013 09 月 9 @ 12:28上午
My mistake then, I'll better look into Nwn 2 then again, thanks.

Exactly what i was going to recommend. Dragon Age: Origins is an odd mix of RPG and tactical teamwork. I happen to really enjoy it. Not everyone does...
