This game does not work! DO NOT BUY (Vista and beyond)
This is ridiculous. I played this game back on XP, and Valve put it on a Steam sale recently. I fired it up for the first time tonight, and it simply DOES NOT WORK.

The issues are well documented. Just look at the front page of this forum.

Check my Steam library. I have a pretty significant catalog, and I have NEVER had a game that was simply broken from the start. This game should not be available to Vista users and beyond for purchase, or there should at least be some kind of "buy at your own risk" warning.

I'm a computer science major. I don't mind applying some tweaks to get an old game to work, and I've been gaming since I was 4 (over 20 years). However, there are NO fixes for this game. "Fixes" range from running the game in administrator with DOS compatibility, to right clicking eight times on the new game button, tapping the top of your head 14.5 times, and drinking four glasses of milk.

I'm clearly being dramatic, but every one of these topics proposes a different fix. Just look at the threads!

I'll be requesting a refund, and I'll be requesting Valve remove this title for sale. There is no doubt it is broken for anyone using a modern operating system.

I agree it is a very broken game that needs to be fixed. I am sure you are having the fist curser icon bug. Have you tried putting it in 16bit mode and loading from a game with mouse free of objects to attack. It is the only thing that works for me 100%.

Runs fine for me on a win 7-64bit machine...

It works great for me in vista and in windows 7
To fix the fist icon bug do the following:
All you have to do, is find the FF.exe file in the game folder and
right click it, go to properties, compatibility tab,
1. check the box that says
"run in compatability mode" , in the pull down menu select "Win98/ME"
2. check to box to disable visual desktop
3. check to box to disable desktop composition
4. click the OK button
5. Now right click on the STEAM shortcut on your desktop that launches STEAM (not the game shortcut.
6. right click it, go to properties, compatibility tab.
7. check the box that says
"run in compatability mode" , in the pull down menu select "XP service pack 3".
8. click the OK button
step 9.
*IMPORTANT*. EXIT steam, make sure you right click close steam thats is still running on your system tray or the changes won't take affect.
Now when you launch steam it will be in xp compatibilty mode, which will allow you to launch freedom force in win 98/ME mode to play the game without the fist bug on newer video cards / newer OSes.

.......Your welcome ;)

in conclusion , this game WORKS, BUY !

Listen, if you can get it working, that's great. But this:

http://steamcommunity.com/app/8880/discussions/0/846940249038563457/
Suggests Windows 98 compatibility mode.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/8880/discussions/0/666825525458966777/
Suggests turning off V-sync.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/8880/discussions/0/864959336503615271/
Suggests launching the executable without Steam.

Some ridiculous notion that the mouse can't be on anything clickable when the game is loaded. This, perhaps, is actually the legitimate bug.

Says to disable desktop composition.

That is five different fixes on the front page. I was able to get a refund. It was only $4, but it was the principal of the thing.

I'm a full-time student and I work part-time. I'm nearing the end of my studies, and while I'm sure I could eventually get the game working, it just wasn't worth spending my very limited time trying to fix it. I tried 1-2 of these fixes, but they didn't work. At that point, I decided to make this post, and I stand by it.

It's very possible that you could get this working with some effort. How valuable is your time, though? Mine is pretty valuable to me, and getting this thing to work wasn't worth the effort, especially when there's a game breaking bug right out of the gate.

Works fine for me on vista. Could not get my old disc to work on vista but saw it on steam and bought it a couple days ago. I did nothing special to get it to work.

Absolutely no effort involved. Maybe I'm just lucky but it works without any tinkering on my end.

I have no idea what game you are troubleshooting because 1.) There is no ff.exe and 2.) There is no compatibility tab under the Steam Properties for the game.

What`s weird is that it was working fine for me when I bought it on Steam, on windows 7, and then suddenly developed the cursor bug out of nowhere, which has been there ever since.

Not sure if it works for the Steam version, but http://www.fileplanet.com/110878/download/Freedom-Force-v1.3-Patch should fix the Vista issues if it`s the same as retail. The FF site posted it as a long awaited fix to the known comp issues with Vista. You might wanna give it a try before asking for a refund and let us know if it works.

No.. It does not work because it doesn't even recognise the Steam version of the game, giving an error message stating that before the patch can be run, the game must first be installed.

That figures. The Steam version of Freedom Force never was very good. It was worth a shot anyway I guess.

PS: I know I`m probably not allowed to say this here, but you could download a torrent of Freedom Force patch 1.3. I`m not a fan of doing this myself but when you already own a copy I don`t think you should feel bad if you do.

The annoying issue I keep having I'm pretty certain is a 32-bit vs. 64-bit issue and it deals with pathfinding and interacting with things on the map. The game runs.. It's just not playable with the interface not working right. I thought I had it working yesterday but the first time I tried to pick something up with a character the whole problem was back.
