I played this game at launch, and it was pretty bad. GFWL was a nightmare, there was constant crashing, multiplayer was a buggy mess, and the actual campaign was severely lacking. I probably would have given it an overall rating of 4.8/10. A slightly below average game.
When it was updated recently, I gave it another try. I do applaud 2K for releasing the massive patch so long after the game was released. For current owners, they got the Minerva's Den DLC for free, GFWL was removed, Steam achievements were added, several bugs were fixed, and multiplayer was much better. Still not perfect though. Lots of lag and no proper anti-cheat in multiplayer, and lots of crashing in single player.
Anyway, on to the main game. The biggest problem I had with the story was that it felt the exact same as the first one. The villain, Sofia Lamb supposedly had entirely different point of view than Andrew Ryan of the original game, but it didn't feel like that because the way she carried out her actions and the way she talked/presented herself was the exact same as Ryan. Some of the endings were a little cliche, the writing for Eleanor had some really cheesy and mediocre moments, and the overall story just didn't feel right. Like, it was all based around this relationship between Eleanor and you, a big daddy. And you're not even her actual father or anything haha. It was just strange. Cool idea, but I think it could have been written better.
I do think a few of the added moral choices were a great touch, how a few main characters fates were all dependent on you. Soundtrack was also fantastic. And while the multiplayer is completely unnecessary, when it worked, sometimes it was pretty fun. The whole background was kinda cool, how it all takes place when Rapture goes to ♥♥♥♥. But of course, there's a stupid levelling system tacked onto it which can kill interest quick. Had to grind for so long to get the last few achievements.
Gameplay wise, there was definitely an improvement. Instead of having all the different types of tonics, they were just grouped under one general selection. Dual wielding was great, and many of the weapons were a lot of fun to use. However, just like the first one, the movement is clunky, the FOV is awful and the guns still felt sluggish. Graphics are ugly for a 2010 game, and environments were practically identical to the original. Enemy variety was essentially the same, and the constant Big Sister fights were just annoyingly tedious and stupid.
I guess I'd give BioShock 2 a flat 6.0/10. It's a decent game. There are definitely improvements from the original, and a few great ideas. However, throughout the campaign, it just really felt like 2K was beating a dead horse. Get it on a sale.
As far as the Minerva's Den DLC goes, it gets universal praise everywhere I see it. I really didn't think it was that special to be honest. The story was decent and the pacing was good, but the gameplay just felt like more of the same. I'd give it 5.5/10, it's an above average add-on.
