A question about cottages.
So I'm rather new to the game and learned the basics, but I have no idea how to make cottages
'work' to become a hamlet. is there a certain requirement for them to advance to hamlets and so forth?

i think they advance over time during the game

That's the thing, is that some cottages will show that it will take X turns advance, but others will say they must work to become a hamlet.

If you click on the nearest city they are "working" on certain tiles. For a cottage, hamlet etc. to advance they must be "worked on" by a city.

You can tell which tiles are worked in normal game view because their yield symbols are larger/bolder. In the city screen, the tiles that are being worked have white circles around them, which defaults to whatever the AI governor picks for you. In this screen, you can change which tiles are worked by simply clicking on them.As long as your cottage tile has a white circle, it will eventually become a hamlet
