Will this game be launched on Linux?

This game is one of my main reason to have Windows installed, but I hate using Windows interface, so, I'm played something like 20hrs.

If was released on OSX, why not on Linux, far as I know, this game uses Python (available on all systems), codecs ogg (opensourced' and mostly used on Linux) and as I know, with Wine works great.

It's never quite that simple. Look at the difference in time it took between the OSX version and Linux versions of TF2. And it still doesn't work compeltely right.

Well, isn't long time, because Steam was porting their full platform to linux and takes almost 2y, TF2 doesn't take too much time since steam platform was on Linux. The hardest part porting a game is the game engine (if is OpenGL should not be so hard, that's the main benefit of openGL) and the client, because resources are mostly linked with game engine. I know Civ IV is a homemade game engine, I don't know if they can do something, but a official info should be thanked.

I must append, a lot of game engines today support Linux, for example, UDK and Unity3D

In my library, this game shows up twice, I assumed one copy was windows, and the other copy was for Linux. But I guess I could be wrong, maybe thats the copy for macs.

Sadly not, one copy is for 32bits and the other is for 64bits. Would be nice if we could use one on Linux. By the way, if someone have crossover (when was free for limited time), this game works flawless (and maybe better than Windows)

How do we know which is which?

You can only install your 32bits OR 64bits. Steam will disable 32bits if you have 64bits or otherwise. Shouldn't be very important this info.

It's definitely the mac version, there has never been a x64 version of Civ4. It'll only let you install the right one for your O/s.

If you have an OS X version of a game (or anything really) and a Windows version, churning out a Linux version should be about half a days work (it's pretty much just window management, audio, keyboard and pointer interaction which is pretty easy -- if you're using something like SDL it should be about 10 minutes worth of work). If you end up with a version which has some novel bug that's not present on either of the other platforms (and isn't related to the OS dependent parts) it's because of that good old "bad design" thing that seems to be infecting everything these days.

Hello. Is here anyone playing Civ4 through Wine? I've got a problem, which comes up NOT every launch, but most of them. I can skip videos, choose in menus and even play using mouseclicks. But if I press anything on keyboard, it crashes. Also sometimes it crashes when I choose any 'Scenarios' in 'Singleplayer' or when I try to load mods. That's a bit strange because rarely I can skip videos with Esc end choose in menu with Enter.
Could someone help? Thank you!

Yes, this is evidently an OS X copy. It has been there before Steam for Linux.

Civ 5 was released in LInux, so i think there is some hope for Civ 4.

It would be nice to have it for linux. Unfortunately, if it ever does support it, it won't support mods which make this game a pure gem.
