Civ 4 won't launch

I've tried launching vanilla, warlords, bts and colonisation and each time nothing happens. All I can find in the init log is this:


[7826.476] ERR: InitWinApp() failed, exiting
[7826.476] ERR: CIV Init FAILED, exiting

Any one know how to fix this?

First, I'd like to ask: Did you install Steam under C:\Program Files?

Had this problem. Not really sure what fixed it. It just started working again after a steam update. I, therefore, believe it is steam related, so make sure your steam client is up to date, and restart.

Then I would be sure to launch steam as administrator at least once and try to launch.

If its still not working, try dissabling anything like antivirus, gamma adjustment, display manipulation, etc. and try it. If it starts working, re-enable stuff one at a time to find the culprit.

If it's still not working, you can try verifying the game caches, then maybe uninstalling and reinstalling (be sure to backup any saves and be sure to purge the related folders under My Documents). Theses didn't seem to make any different for me, but you never know.
