Weird Setting Discrepancy

Why is there a bloody Old Norse temple with an entry looking like a Moai statue sitting squat in the middle of the never before during the time of humans walkable ground of the Meditteranean Sea? Why not in the mountains of Scandinavia or in some obscure Fjord cave? Maybe even somewhere near the Bosporus if you really need a Mediterranean setting, I mean they were there after all.
