I was just wondering if playing Fate of the World has altered anyone's views on climate change and its causes and impacts.

I went from casually understanding global warming and assuming scientists would save us, to becoming obsessed with it, researching it, watching documentaries on it, and digging up any information I could. Follow environmentalist blogs and websites, and I occasionally clench my butt cheeks thinking about how many times I STILL lose this game.

I went from optimistic that we'd figure it all out in the end and I could keep eating steaks and playing Skyrim, to assuming we're living in a golden age that's about to crumble while drinking a kale and tofu shake.
I used to be very interested on the subject BEFORE I started playing and I thought the game was very accurate, albeit just a game... I had the fortunate opportunity to study Sustainable Agriculture for my masters (still got a summer to go for my project ^^) and now that I understand the depth of these issues, I find the game very, very slow and extremly limited in options: why doesn't it consider yield potential of each crop in different regions and give me direct control over it so I can significantly increase production and bolster economy; why can't I assign specific varieties to be grown in different countries so that the drought tolerant plants get to be grown in desert-like areas and possibly more wheat in Russia, or something; 18% of the world's energy today already comes from renewable sources, so why does it take so much in-game to increase it ffs! lol
Whatever, gene plague gamma is good too ;)
I wish the game was easier to mod, playing around with the variables would have made the game awesome. I tried making a super volcano mod, but couldn't get it to work.
I was a huge advocate of Nuclear Energy before the game even came out and saw very few disadvantages to it, after playing it and researching some more I realized that there are significant problems to that as well.

But the main thing I learnt is that we really need to get this space exploration thing going, I want that He-3 dammit!
A lot has changed since this game first came out.

* The "hockey stick" graph projecting skyrocketing temperatures and a "tipping point" has been revealed to be completely fraudulent.

* According to satellite measurements, there has been no significant global warming for more than 15 years. Dozens of computer models have proven to be garbage.

* Ice on both poles is currently increasing. (35 year record high this year for anarctica, and 50% increase for Arctic ice in 2013)

Basically it turns out that Global Warming is little more than a marxist exercise in wealth redistribution.
Al Gore has made a ton of money on global warming hype but hasn't sold any of his many waterfront properties.

It is sobering to ponder what mankind could have accomplished with the huge sums flushed on global warming.

Still I love this kind of simulation game even when it is largely unrealistic. The oil production model of this game assumes oil production will keep going down (peak oil theory), but reality keeps moving in the opposite direction.

I don't want to start a Steam forum flame war, those seem to be easy to begin.

But my sources from two climatoligists based up north (I'm in Canada) and some stats from US climatology centres seems to indicate the opposite of what yo're saying.

Ice on both poles is increasing, Yes, this is true, but land ice is shrinking, shelf/water surface ice is increasing. On a typical glacier, that means that the largest densest water is shrinking, but the trivial stuff that hangs on to the side is increasing. It's not indicative of a better planet.

I don't know what the hockey stick is, I'm basing it off of PPM graphs and again, friends who went into the climate sciences and are based in some frigid wasteland right now.

Peak Oil, you say reality continues to move in the opposite direction. I concede this is true, but is that not the very theory of peak oil? We're going to continue to produce more and more and more but it isn't infinite so eventually we'll hit the "peak".

Educational Yet Entertaining Sources : (I admit the second source is a sensationalist title but provides an objective logic based truth table of things-Vegas odds style)

I think most players of this game are educated enough to dismiss Benwah, but for the fun of it:

"The "hockey stick" graph projecting skyrocketing temperatures and a "tipping point" has been revealed to be completely fraudulent."

-No it hasn't. In fact just today several articles were discussing new data to back this up.

"According to satellite measurements, there has been no significant global warming for more than 15 years. Dozens of computer models have proven to be garbage."

- This is due to the ocean taking very good care of us. While temperatures didn't rise as expected the last 15 years, the ocean became more acidic than predicted. No one knows how long the ocean will continue mopping it up for us. It's not a good thing either. The ecosystem of the ocean is changing dramatically, and a more acidic ocean risks messing with the methane clathrates (and if you played this game, those words alone should be pretty scary).

" Ice on both poles is currently increasing. (35 year record high this year for anarctica, and 50% increase for Arctic ice in 2013)"

- I hear this so much, deniers like to jump and point at this "undeniable evidence". This is new ice. Not old ice.

What is more? a square foot of solid rock or a square foot of coarse gravel? If you don't know the answer to that, then that's where the deniers are getting you. Lots and lots of new ice growth is not as healthy as a bunch of hearty old glaciers. The amount of new ice forming does not make up for the amount of old ice that's melting.

"Basically it turns out that Global Warming is little more than a marxist exercise in wealth redistribution. "

This is pretty hilarious because it pretty much says that 99.8% of all the scientists across all fields of science are in on some communist secret agenda. Do you see where that's silly yet?

And completely aside that fact, what exactly is wrong with wealth redistribution? Are we villainizing Robin Hood these days? Are we against charities and helping the poor?

"Al Gore has made a ton of money on global warming hype but hasn't sold any of his many waterfront properties."

Al Gore is to climate denialists as Nazi's/Hitler arguments are to the internet. Once you bring up Al Gore in a discussion you're volunteering to lose the argument.

"It is sobering to ponder what mankind could have accomplished with the huge sums flushed on global warming."

I find it far more sobering to imagine what kind of technology we could have had if even 1/3rd of the US military's budget was spent on anything else.

" The oil production model of this game assumes oil production will keep going down (peak oil theory), but reality keeps moving in the opposite direction. "

If that's true, why are even major oil companies beginning to spread out and invest in alternatives (whether green or not)? The blue collars pumping the oil might not believe it, but the logistics and strategists at the top see it. The era of oil is running out.
There's new details being discovered every year and it's quite possible the game has ♥♥♥♥♥♥ a bunch of things wrong. I haven't been viewing the game as a truly reliable source on climate change issues, if that's what you're asking.

If you're asking in a more general sense, then... aside from a handful of rednecks in the US, everyone has been well aware of anthropogenic climate change for decades.
It's a completely made up lie by the new world order to tax the white man. Notice how African, Indian and Chinese scientists (in their respective countries) all say that it's a lie? That's because it is.
[FOAD]Iron, a recent -GLOBAL- survey found that 9300+ Scientists agree that it is both happening, and caused by humans. The survey included scientists from the countries mentioned.

Out of all the scientists, only 1 said he didn't believe it was caused by humans. 1 sole, single, man.
meh, i dont really care...... humanity can go burn for all i care! .....global warming?.....i welcome it becuase its too cold as it is now! :P

hurry up and warm the planet up a bit more.....then if it gets out of control then its the next generation that will sufer and die for it LOL

and who cares about the next generation?
ive seen enough of humanity to think that ts innevitable destruction would be a kindness!
TROLL ALERT!!! Please do not feed the Troll (Caelus)!
The real debate is that we should care for the enviroment and that is something I don't always find back with the people who deny the existence of the global warming. See how the entire USA goes banana about frakking ...
This game made me more interested in the subject, no doubt about it. After playing it for a while, I researched it a lot more than I did previously.

So it certainly managed to achieve the educational portion of it, I believe.
Yeah, BIG TIME. But not for the intended purpose, if anything Im even waaaay less environmentally friendly. I think the game gives you an ultimatum and its pretty much a choice between 2 worlds. An unsustainable yet wealthy one, and a sustainable, but impoverished and frugal one. Essentially thats the way I see it. It didnt change my opinion on whether climate change is a real problem, I strongly believe in climate change, but our response to climate change is what it has altered my perception on. The frustration, hardship, and human suffering that is caused in game while trying to "go green" just didn't cut it for me. I'd rather have an Africa where all they worry about is African Kim Kardashian (ahem, disinformation card), then a world filled with human poverty and misery. My own personal "outlook" has probably shifted from Materialist to like, full on Hedonist. I feel like at least half of the worlds problems are economic and if there was no poverty, our world would be just awesome. So, yeah, don't be afraid to splurge a little, and don't be afraid to ask for plastic not paper. Be a little naughty and spend! >:3
