X-COM: UFO Defense

Weird difficulty with OpenXcom?
Has anyone tried this? It's a great mod, I love the way it adds different skin and hair colours to mix up the squad a bit.

But is it more or is the game's difficultly screwed up in it?

I know it's not really a fair game all the time but whenever I play it with this version is stupidly unfair- my soilders don't stand a chance even on a very small crashed UFO. I can't tell if it's random luck or this mod, but I've been playing it just on the plain Steam version and it seems reasonable now, though I've got an alien base mission in the first month with Chrysallids who take 6 shots to kill and can kill three soilders in one turn, each one hit death with power armour on.

They had to rewrite the AI from scratch and I think they tuned the toughness of the critters. I haven't got to Mutons yet, but lord help us

I read from somewhere that the original X-Com has a bug on difficulty, even when you start with superhuman and load a save, it reverts back to beginner level. XcomUtil can fix it tho, (So i wonder how hard it really is with that superhuman level.) and OpenXcom as John said, has its own difficulty remade. Just got OpenXcom myself, can't wait to start grinding it.

Open X-Com is hard as balls. My SOP playstyle for Vanilla X-Com (with the difficulty bug fixed) is superhuman, one base, ironman with no Blaster Bombs, Psionics or Plasma. Playing Open X-Com though the aliens kick my butt pretty regularly on Veteran. I'm loving it.

More things trigger reaction fire in Open X-Com. Also the aliens will make a concious effort to save TU's themselves. Not only that but the aliens will use autofire when reacting as opposed to previously when they would just rely on snap shots.. Also the aliens will rely on cover more, move to stratigic positions, retreat if they are outgunned or outnumberd, and on the larger maps I've noticed that they will have a few troops pin down your squad while another group will actually try and flank you... Or at least it seems that way.

Yes, Open XCom greatly increases the difficulty. It is far and away harder than the original ever was (even with the originals bug fixed).

They almost always have enough TU's for an auto-fire, and they will almost always see you as you approach. So that means you will almost always come under auto-fire attack before you can ever possibly know they are there.

It pretty much forces you to use grenades, and lots of them. You'll also go through soldiers in the start like none other. They'll take a step forward, die, but reveal the alien. You can then either grenade the alien, or send a second soldier up and pray they can't auto-shot you again.

A shame, because I love the garphical updates like the different hair colours/ethnicities of the soilders they've added in. It's no longer a village of the damned squad. It means one can identify with individual soilders more as they look a bit less cloned.

I don't have the patience, indeed skill to play on this new hardcore mode- I think it'd be nice if a difficulty comparable to the original's was added in.

Open X-Com has a lot of cool options you can turn on/off to make the game harder or easier (mostly harder, but yeah). You can access that from the title screen by going to Options >> Advanced. There's some cool stuff there, like pathfinding previews (single-click to see your path, double-click to move) death notifications (so you know which soldier died), and then some evil options like "Aggressive Retaliation" and "Sneaky AI" that you might not want to turn on. But a cool feature I've found is the "strafe setting" which allows your soldiers to continue facing one direction while moving sideways- that one helps the game a lot, I think.

HOWEVER, there definitely is at least one way that Open X-Com is for sure harder- At the beginning of every mission, any alien that is within a certain radius of your ship will begin the mission FACING YOU, which increases the likelyhood of your troops being mowed down as they try to exit the Skyranger. And I'm pretty sure that one's a feature, not an option, so you can't turn it off (I could be wrong).

That being said, I've definitely noticed that Open X-Com is harder than a bug-fixed original, but with my "advanced options" settings I don't feel like the difficulty increased *that* much. I'm in my fourth month on Veteran mode and am doing decently well.
