There are are graphics mods, but nothing that is going to make the game look like 2010. OpenXcom fiddles with the graphics, but I don't use it because the Steam/Dosbox version looks much better on my system (I play Xcom on an XP machine).

I recommend using XCOMUTIL at least. It easily works with the Steam version and is a great enhancement. Getting UFO extender to work is tougher but it can be done (there's a thread on this forum somewhere) but when I did it I was again disappointed with the graphics.

Well Open X-Com is less of a mod, more of a complete remake of the game in C++

I have fallen in love with Open X-Com personally the AI is better, there are a bajillion other settings I can tweak, and it makes it into a whole new game.

Of course, when I first started playing X-Com it was on 3,1/4 inch floppies so the updates provided by Open X-Com really did do a lot to liven it up, if you haven't played it before, then I'd suggest using X-Com Util with just the bugfixes to play as close to a vanilla experience as possible.

OpenXcom. Pretty much does what all the other mods want to do but ends up being much more stable.

There are some graphics mods for openxcom.

I love Xcomutil for the option "Get research help from captured aliens". This option vastly increases research times and makes the game much more interesting, forcing you to take risks to identify and capture valuable aliens like engineers. No good if you want a short game, though.

Open XCom. All of the gameplay changes are optional and turned off at the start so you can play a vanilla game if you want or turn on whatever options suit you.

Best part - they're implementing a lot of the stuff from XComUtil as options.

Well sebs UFO extender has other features not included in openXcom I believe. I could be wrong though.

Yeah openXcom sure is delightful though.
