Unmanned Bases
As I move along I build bases with mostly radar. If you put no men (soldiers, scientists and engineers) in your base can the aliens find and attack the base? Aliens use brain waves to find your base. I never had an empty base attacked. Has anyone ever had an empty base attacked?

Yes. An empty base with no defenses will be automatically destroyed. To avoid this, build storage or living quarters ASAP and move men and HWPs into the base. Defenses alone won't do it.

^^^That is good to know. What a weenie exploit that would have been.

Thanks, I have played this game several times over the years starting on playstation and I have only had 4 or 5 bases attacked. This game seemed to play different on playstation. The aliens seemed smarter IMO.

Since I started using the XCOMUTIL patch that fixed the difficulty bug, I've spent more hours than I care to admit playing this game on Veteran difficulty. In some games the aliens relentlessly attacked bases, in others they did so rarely. The only time I've lost bases is when I built them prematurely, before I had enough cash to develop and support them. When they sit vacant for a long time eventually the aliens find them and zap them. You don't get warning of the attack, just a message advising you that your base was destroyed.

I know this Forum has nothing to do with this, but I have to ask, I've been really interested in getting X-COM for the Playstation. Primarily because I perfer console over computer. But I want to know if there are any major changes before hand.

No changes really. It played a little easier with the controller.

I'll have to get that then. The problem with PS1 is, the games are kind of hard to find for those who don't want to use EBAY.

I got a copy at a garage sale before (lost it later on). I have seen the game selling for as much as $100. I still have a ps 2 and was looking for a copy.

You lose the base, but there's no score penalty for losing a base. Detection and Intercept bases are pretty cheap, so I don't even both with defenses most of the time.
As the comments before you, yes you can but its not as bad as building a new base then as soon as I'm sending 14 or 15 troops to the new base it is destroyed by a battleship so...Yep...

you should add some soldiers.
Lets say 20.
don't forget to send/buy weapons too.
there allways was a problem with base defences:
don't have more weapons in your bases then you need.
when you have 70 grenades and some riffles + clips in stock then in a worse case scenario you get 70 grenades and 10 rifles without ammo.
the game never give you more then 80 items.
so make sure that you don't have 90 rifles in your storage.

If you are not sending out interceptors or assaulting downed UFO's from that base then the probability of the aliens even looking for it is pretty low. They search in areas they are attacked from.

20 soldiers cost 800k up-front and cost another 400k each month. You also have to give them armor and weapons. This is a huge cost considering that the entire base is probably 2-3 million.

If you're diligent about shooting down the UFOs on retaliation missions, they'll never find your base.
