Installing this game?
I picked up a new (sealed) copy of this game, but apparently, it's one of the first run, because it doesn't include a steam key.

Google says I should be able to install it without one since it was a known issue, but it doesn't want to install.

Does anyone know what the trick is to binding it to your account?

A little late to the party here but...

According to another user I have spoken with who is experiencing the issue Valve has prevented the game from being activated. This was done as it was being abused by users who were using an ISO to activate the game.

Apparently after being sent back and forth between 2K Games and Valve he is still without a resolution.

I'm quite disappointed myself as I also purchased the game recently only to later discover this issue. :(

Thanks for the info. Freaking idiots ruining it for the rest of us
I'm impressed the other guy got a response from 2K. I sent them a help request 2 weeks ago and haven't even got an email from 'em yet.

Steam support didn't seem to understand my issue, (huge shock there, right?) So I'm not sure where to go from here.

Do you know if any of the copies out there actually have keys in them?

No idea there unfortunately but considering stock is still being sold without keys after all these years it wouldn't surprise me if the game was never re-printed with keys included.

I decided to email 2K and Steam after writing my reply to this thread so will be sure to update if I get anyone... though of course I'm not too confident about that happening.

Almost a month has passed now and still no assistance from 2K Games in regards to the issue.

I just submitted a bug report on the Steam Beta bug tracking board, for those interested in adding to the complaint it can be accessed at http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/558752450824501819/

Just got the game and same issue. No CD key in the package and trying to install the game steam pops up and ask for one. I don't know what to do now.

I was able to get Steam support to add it to my account, and from the way they dealt with it, I'm guessing that they do so routinely. It took lots of waiting between replies, though, so be prepared for a lengthy process and a series of initial unhelpful responses from them before they finally do it.

Steam support is asking telling me to return the game if it didn't come with a CD Key...I dont know how else to explain it as it seems they're not reading everything...

I've heard people have mixed success with both Steam and 2K. Some people get a Steam support staff who is willing to assist and add the game without troubles, like you I got someone who was unhelpful.

After I think ~9 months I finally got the issue resolved for myself as well as a handful of my friends. This was thanks to 2K in the end.

If you could raise a support ticket at http://support.2kgames.com/ you may have more success. To possibly help the escalation you may want to make reference to my support ticket number #730479. After various rounds of escalation the 2K staff which was able to assist was "Charley N." so it may be worth asking if the request can be escalated to him.

When raising your ticket be sure to include the following:

1. Photo/scan of the receipt for the game showing the date and amount of purchase.

2. Photo of the physical disc/box accompanied by your email address written on a piece of paper in the photo.

3. Photo/scan of the back of the game manual or code sheet clearly displaying the missing or invalid code area.

4. The activation serial key typed into the text body of the request.

5. If you received an error message when redeeming the code, please include the exact error message.

Hope this helps and best of luck getting your issue sorted.

Thanks, I'll try that too.

Haha this is what steam tells me:

"Steam Support has provided you with all of the relevant information regarding this issue. You can log into your account at support.steampowered.com to review your Steam Support tickets.

You will receive no further correspondence regarding this matter."

2K support has been helpful, they gave me a key but it was a duplicate so now I'm just waiting for another response.

Using this method I was able to get a working key directly from 2K. Took a long while, but got it in the end. Did as described and linked to a few steam pages like this where many people are having the same problem.
