can't get to steam community in bioshock 1

I am playing the game, which I bought on amazon, and really enjoy it.
But i can't get to the steam community while playing, it really frustrates me.
It's ok in every other game, in every other game i can get to the steam community but in bioshock i can't. What should I do? I am activating any game through the Big Picture mode (if it matters).

You have retail, correct? Some of the retail games, when shortcuts are added to the game browser, still do not allow for the overlay. However, sometimes even with Steam Games, it will not allow you to use it, you can usually fix that by exiting the game and running it again.

I am playing the game 3 days already so restarting didn't work, and what is retail?

Retail means that the game is store bought, that you have a hard copy of the game (dvd disk, case, etc.) Most older store bought games cannot be "activated" on steam, but rather can be ran "through" steam allowing you to use the overlay, but for some games it still does not work.

Then no, it's not retail, i bought in on amazon, it was a cd key.

So wait, do you mean that you bought a steam cd key off of Amazon for Bioshock? Then you activated the cd key on Steam?

Yep, I downloaded the game through steam and I am playing it. It all works fine and I really enjoy it but I just can't get to the steam community in the game (Shift+Tab or Controller home button).

Amazon allows for steam activation of games. It's weird, but it works.

But it means you have the retail version. No Steam overlay or achievements.
