Long or Short routes?
So I have been playing around with both long and short bus and/or tram routes, and I haven't quite determined which works more effectively. Your thoughts?

For my impression it depends of vehicle type. Slow vehicle (buses, trams) more profitable short routes, rapid vehicle (metro, helicopters) may be more profitable longer routes (in short routes they waite a lot of time before staition).
I've always used short routes as it feels more efficient and there are less people at stops. If someone is travelling a long distance and uses two buses, do they pay for both rides?
i mostly go with long one's, but always on the edge with money. found this "let's play" in the forums. might be helpful as a tutorial or reference

Wow. Almost 48 hours of gameplay with tutorials. That's impressive. I'll have a look-see over some of them and see what he does.

I like to use short routes connected. This way your vehicles don't get stuck in traffic that much

Short routes is better since you use less vehicles and still make alot of money also passengers on longer routes often get unhappy.
I've been playing with a new idea. I created four or five long bus lines with a sufficient number of buses, connected and subsidized by shorter tram and bus lines. It's making a decent amount, and I'll think of putting together some metro lines.
The thing is, the pricing system is arranged thus: Someone buys a ticket for a type of transport (bus, tram, metro etc) With that ticket they can use that mode of transport as many times as they want) So if you made a huge bus network, but had nothing else, they could get from wherever they want to wherever they want for a very limited amount of money. Therefore I usually have a large tram network, with plenty of bus feeder lines to the outlying tram stations, and then an integrated metro for fast cross-city travel. But I personally prefer to play on very large maps (custom), while on normal maps, it would be harder to make it in the same way. Hope this helps.

depends on your choice of vehicle or where you want to place the line.
SHort, direct, clear lines.

From my initial experiences so far... Easing congestion on bus routes is easier done by reducing the number of stops, especially shared stops. I went from one line using 6 buses and having 200 people queuing near a store, to cutting out two stops, bypassing a shared stop, and ended up running the line perfectly with just two buses. When a bus stop gets clogged, don;t just add buses, figure out why it's clogging, redirect the route, cut any stops with no one waiting at them, etc.

As for trams. I'm running longer routes on those with 6-8 stops. I currently have three tram lines, two serviced by a single 25 capacity tram and one busier one serviced by 2 25s and a 10. I've eyt to toy with the metro much but from the looks of things, the longer the route (and fewer stops) the better. With the high station cost/maintenance, it seems best to use it as a high speed, high capacity line from one end of the city centre to the other ( or more specifically from one high traffic area to another. )
You can make tram routes pretty long, up to 15 stops if it's not a very busy line. However buses work better on short feeder lines.
FYI, you don't make money if passengers transfer onto the same vehicle they were initially on. So bus > bus to get to their destination, they only pay once. As told in the tutorial. So everyone who relies on short routers connecting the same type of vehicle might notice less profit.
I like to have a central metro line (usually circular with two lines, one going each way), tram lines in other 'main' areas, and bus routes feeding these. The metros make lots of profit but are very expensive and tend to stick underground as its just so hard to fit them in above ground in the areas I want them in!

You have to use ALOT more vehicles for long routes so it still pays off using short routes
