I don't understand how Bethesda can make such a blatant mistake (unless it's me who hasn't figured out how to deal with it). Any NPC can die, why not ensure a replacement or at least make it possible to purchase lumber at any mill so I can go and buy from another if the owner of one mill has died!?
PS. The quest that had me kill the owner of thgis mill is part of the Dark Brotherhood main quest line.
Also, the quest is not a main quest for the Dark Brotherhood. It's a sidecontract that can be left alone, since you dont have to do almost none of them to proceed.
Are you a thane in Morthal? Maybe that's the reason you can get lumber for free, or you've done the mill owner some service? - Maybe it's a bug, a nice bug for once? ;)
But I've since become thane in Dawnstar and purchased land there too. I haven't visited the property yet but will be doing so soon. I sure hope this'll mean the end to this annoying issue, or at least that I won't have problems building a house there too.
Some mills let you make your own sawn logs by using the big saw mill yourself. The only one I've encountered who didnt let me use it was an orc near Dragon Bridge, if I remember correctly. For instance, Hod at Riverwood lets me saw my own, but it take a painstakingly long time to do it that way. Lift a log, initiate the sawing and wait and you only get 10 sawn logs.
I do not believe the free logs is a bug but rather an intendentional feature. Wether you can get them for free from any given mill is probably dependent on the in-game choices you have made to date.
Yes, I've used the saw mill myself, but I can't take the lumber with me, so it was to no avail.
[qyote=Mr^Rabbit]But providing you do not leave the region you can cut as many logs as you want... I tend to do 5-10 cuttings per visit (50-100 sawn logs).
I am Thane of Morthal. I am also thane of Falkreath and Whiterun but the mill at Riverwood wont let me cut my own.

How do you take the lumber with you? I've clicked on it but doing so didn't put it in my inventory.
In the previous game I played I had to make a purchase because the mill owners would arrange for the lumber to be transported to my land. Maybe this is why I can't take it with me now?
I'll report back how it turned out.
