Heartfire problem with Lumber purchase.
I have made my first Hearthfire purchase and spend the materials I had avaialbale on the land, creating the first minor layout, whereupon I was given a quest to go and purchase lumber at a specified location.

However, that location has no salesman because I killed him recently during a Dark Brotherhood Contract. I went there anyway, of course without result, and yet now the marker won'\t go away.

I've been unable to purchase lumber from any other mill because the conversations don't include the option, so now I'm curious to find out if there's any solution to this bug, since otherwise I'll have simply wasted the money spend on purchasing the Hearthfire expansion as I'll never get a chance to play it.

I sure hope this stupid, annoying issue can be fixed. I'll be grateful if anybody can share some input on this.

lol. Why did you kill him or join the dark brotherhood? I had no problems with lumber.
The owner of the lumber mill was a wampire, the Dark Brotherhood had a contract on him and I was send to kill him, which I did.

I don't understand how Bethesda can make such a blatant mistake (unless it's me who hasn't figured out how to deal with it). Any NPC can die, why not ensure a replacement or at least make it possible to purchase lumber at any mill so I can go and buy from another if the owner of one mill has died!?

PS. The quest that had me kill the owner of thgis mill is part of the Dark Brotherhood main quest line.

there are other lumber mills
If Hern's corpse is still there, just use the resurrect console command on it from the console. Aside from that, you can try spawning Hern with the console. The command is, without commas, "player.placeatme 0001367B 1"
Also, the quest is not a main quest for the Dark Brotherhood. It's a sidecontract that can be left alone, since you dont have to do almost none of them to proceed.

Ah, why didn't I think of that. Good idea. Thanks. :)

I see. I always assumed it was mandatory in order to trigger the main quest line since it always begins when I get back to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary having completed the "kill Hern" quest.

Haven't played the Dark Brotherhood quest but get my lumber from Solitude sawmill. Need to order from the Orc during working hours, not the owner.
I tried the Riverwood sawmill but didn't get any option to purchase/order lumber. Same thing at the Ivarsted sawmill. Both are places where you should normally be able to purchase/order lumber, so I assume the same bug is active at Solitude sawmill. But I'll give it a try if nothing else works.
I get mine for free from the Morthal saw mill

Hm, I actually went to Morthal and found the same situation there.

Are you a thane in Morthal? Maybe that's the reason you can get lumber for free, or you've done the mill owner some service? - Maybe it's a bug, a nice bug for once? ;)

But I've since become thane in Dawnstar and purchased land there too. I haven't visited the property yet but will be doing so soon. I sure hope this'll mean the end to this annoying issue, or at least that I won't have problems building a house there too.

Some mills let you make your own sawn logs by using the big saw mill yourself. The only one I've encountered who didnt let me use it was an orc near Dragon Bridge, if I remember correctly. For instance, Hod at Riverwood lets me saw my own, but it take a painstakingly long time to do it that way. Lift a log, initiate the sawing and wait and you only get 10 sawn logs.

But providing you do not leave the region you can cut as many logs as you want... I tend to do 5-10 cuttings per visit (50-100 sawn logs).

Yes, I am Thane of Morthal. I am also thane of Falkreath and Whiterun but the mill at Riverwood wont let me cut my own.

I do not believe the free logs is a bug but rather an intendentional feature. Wether you can get them for free from any given mill is probably dependent on the in-game choices you have made to date.
I've checked again after purchasing another piece of land, and it doesn't look good. I still can't purchase lumber anywhere.

Yes, I've used the saw mill myself, but I can't take the lumber with me, so it was to no avail.

How do you take the lumber with you? I've clicked on it but doing so didn't put it in my inventory.

In the previous game I played I had to make a purchase because the mill owners would arrange for the lumber to be transported to my land. Maybe this is why I can't take it with me now?
get a manservent for your house and just order the wood threw him. you do that by taking a follower to the house and asking him to work there

Now there's an idea, though I thought I read that you need to build the house before you can get a steward for it, but this is worth checking it out.

I'll report back how it turned out.
