Dawnguard DLC Gone, But I Still Get The Dawnguard Quest
Hmm. So the Dawnguard DLC that seems to have been mistakenly given out is now gone. But.....I started up a saved game from before the 'mistake', and as soon as I fast travel to Windhelm I meet a guard who tells me about Dwanguard and the vampires and it displays the start of the Dwanguard quest.

How can this be, with the DLC gone and me running a saved game from much earlier in the day ?

Check your data files. The ESM might still be there letting you play Dawnguard.

You have the Dawnguard files.

What they removed was your license to play the game, so if you want to own it legitimately you'll have to buy it from the store but you still have the data files for the DLC on your hard drive. You can play the DLC like any legitimate owner. It's all about how honest you are, whether or not you decide to keep the DLC installed and play it when you don't technically own it.

I know I'll be keeping it lol.

Yes, it seems I have dawnguard.bsa and dawnguard.esm. I presume the game is going to screw up without the DLC so I should delete these.

To be honest....I don't think I could play some amazing world-saving Dragonborn, scrupulous and fair, whilst being a member of the Thieves Guild in real life....hehe. I'll probably buy Dawnguard next month when I have some money for it.

Hmmmmm, this is real strange.

1.) Automatic 700 Mb update
2.) No Dawnguard DLC checked in properties, store says I can purchase
3.) Dawnguard esm file in loader
4.) Checked Skyrim directory and find Dawnguard BSA file at 1,159,708 KB
5.) Checked Skyrim directory and find Dawnguard.esm file at 24,470 KB
6.) WTF?!!?!?

I am going to uncheck the esm in loader because I suspect if the files get retracted, your new saves with dawnguard esm enabled will become useless.

I have bbbbbaaaaaaaadddd feeling about this. Steam why you do dis, why Steam....

You would have seen the DLC earier, for an hour or so. Steam removed it.

Personally I am deleting both those Dawnguard files.

Rigth now, they cant remove the file from your game, if they do it, they will screw up your game saves being (them) completely conscious about it. We wont suffer from their mistakes.

Yup, I still have the dawnguard files. Even though, it said I dont have the dlc.

Boo I killed this download because I wanted my bandwidth at the time, and now I don't get it.

Valid point, but I am going to purge the files I think. I am suspect these days of many games doing updates without any explanation. I bought the X space series through the Humble bundle and there were updates. Now the two games I initially owned are not working when they were fine prior. I'm sick of this crap. The whole Games Live for Windows is another fiasco. Steam should announce what has happened here for peace of mind and clarity on what it may impact. Not only that, it eats up space.

Not really. You don't have the "right" to it in any sense. The files were put on your computer, though you never made a purchase. It would be akin to a friend coming over and installing his game files on your PC, and then you utilizing those files on your own steam account.

Whoever made the mistake is at fault obviously, but soon after the download was released, they revoked the license associated with the DLC (apart from those who didn't already purchase it). So while they might be to blame, they're still entirely within their rights to ban your Steam account (blocking access to all games you may have purchased legitimately) if you choose to play the DLC without a license.

So at that point it comes down to risk versus reward, with a pinch of morality coming in to question.

It works perfectly! Don't delete nothing! They can't stealt or delete your archives from your PC! That's illegal in all the democracys of the world! It`s like break in a house to stealth! You have the right to have it now!
Actually you don't actually own it, its pretty much same as pirating, you didn't pay for it yet you downloaded it.

I don't touch my archives in any way! They make the download and don't ask to me..And the game is "dawnguarded" when i open it. After that i don't touch nothig. Really, i don't know how to became the game to the previous state.
You just delete the two dawnguard files in you skyrim/data ?

It's not exactly the same thing as piracy, as there was no intent. The download was forced on anyone with Skyrim installed, they didn't purposefully try to get it without paying.

That said, while I'm probably not going to delete the Dawnguard files, I probably also won't enable them or play it.
