The Path of Knowledge
I am not sure if this is the right place to be posting this, but I downloaded the Dragon Born DLC and have been playing it until recently. I have got up to the Path of Knowledge, and have entered Nchardak. When I go down to the Great Chamber, I find that Neloth stands just in front of the shaft. He doesn't move, he simply stands there. I have tried attacking him, where he defends himself but after I go to prison and come back, he is in the exact same spot. I wait and nothing happens. I would like to know how I can get him to move and activate the 'control switch'. I don't care if I have to finish the quest through the command console. However, I am unable to do this because when I try to add an item of the Dragon Born DLC the command console tells me the compiled script is not saved. Again, any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

unoffical patches

I have the unofficial patch but I have no idea how to set it up, and if I have set it up properly it doesn't work . . .
Any other ideas?

There's more than one unofficial patch. I was having a bunch of problems until eventually I found out there's a patch for Dragonborn, Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and regular Skyrim. Each one is a different file. I put the Dragonborn patch in, and it worked like a charm.

Okay was this on steam or nexus?

Even if you add a unique quest item with player.additem in the console, it duplicates the base object not the instance (there can be many instances for a single base object). The scripts are attached to instances individually, not base objects. Instead, it's best to COC (center on cell command) to the right area, toggle god mode to be safe, and then retrieve the instance object yourself. Alternatively, find the quest ID and use console commands to progress the stage.

Unfortunately if I use noclip or godmode when I get to the book, there is no option to take it and for some reason, none of my dragon born Object ID's are what they are meant to be. By the way, I am not too good with the console as I have only recently bought the game.

HHmm. Well I know that for DLC, IDs are assigned to items when you open the game and they depend on the load order. So, generally, you can't look up the ID from the internets or something. But that only applies to DLC and mods, not Skyrim main. You can however find any item ID in game by typing
help "itemName"
which will display a list of ID's of items, one of which will probably be item you are looking for.

But in general, you shouldn't just add an item to your inventory or complete a quest with console commands, because you never know if there was a script somewhere on some item that was supposed to run but you never picked up that item and instead console'd a scriptless duplicate into your inventory.

Double check you have all the official updates, and unofficial patches that wowszer posted above.

Okay thankyou. I will but shouldn't the games auto-update?

Here's a way which worked for me: I ran around to a further part of the map where there was some sort of enemy to kill. I then made that character follow me all the way to where Neloth was. After killing it, Neloth realized that he had no more to kill and opened the door!

Open console click on him, type resetai, enter. Done. I think.
