does anyone else think the beginning could've been done better ?
being carted into helgen as a prisoner is one thing but almost being executed by the imperials is another to me now i have hardly sided with the imperials more because they try to kill you at the beginning of the game now if they weren't the ones i'd have less reason to avoid siding with them well that and having the thalmor with them aswell now if someone could make a mod to change afew things this could make the story abit more interesting.

the ones who want to execute you maybe another faction instead and maybe have the thalmor as a seperate faction so you'd have three factions to pick from.

this may break the story some but so would a mod i've used that gives you random starting point so its not always the same.

hell if every race had a faction to work with could be interesting say if the dark elves had a group of their own or khajiit maybe guild or something.

i also never quite understood why they changed the fighters guild from oblivion to the companions guild in skyrim.

yeah thats what i mean instead of being almost killed by imperials getting to choose them on more a equal ideas of stormcloaks and then you find out the ups and downs of both.

in which case stormcloaks seem almost the lesser of two evils except the stormcloaks are racists and i think stole skyrim from previous races.

but the imperials want to control skyrim with help of the thalmor and the thalmor want to have another war at the expense of the stormcloaks and imperials.

No, you didn't cross the border "illegally". It doesnt imply, suggest or even hint about that.
You did however come across the border and got caught up in the middle of a trap the Imperials set for Ulfric Stormcloak.
It says nothing about what region you were coming from (although oddly you are carted as a prisoner to Helgen in the middle of Skyrim) .. and if by chance you're playing a Nord character, you're most likely coming back into your home territory. But it doesn't even mention that either.
However one thing is certain, your appearance coincides with the re-emergeance of Alduin and that is prophecy.
Although you don't know it quite yet, you are the Dragonborn (chosen of Akatosh) which hasn't been seen in hundreds of years since the three heroes first mucked up banishing Alduin into the future. (The future is now where you come in).
Whatever the case may be, you're simply caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time.
You as the Dragonborn have no clue where you really came from because there is no memory to recall. It could be you were formed from the mists by Akatosh* and set upon Mudus to fulfill the prophecy and your destiny to confront and then destroy Alduin.

***Addendum:
After that, it's your choice of what path to pursue.

I use the "Live Another Life" mod. It adds several new starts to the game including race specific ones. Argonians can be dockworkers in Windhelm, Dark Elves can start in Raven Rock, Orcs can start in an Orc Stronghold, etc. You can be a new recruit in either army or any of the guilds. A home owner in any of the cities. Shipwrecked, camping, left for dead by bandits in the wilderness, etc.

LOL yea I always had issues with the placement of where you start. But I guess it doesnt matter since you always start in the middle of something ... a boat, a jail cell and now a cart :/

It would have been fantastic if they did the start like how they did with Morrowind ... I always liked that. Quick story from Azura then POW right in the center of Helgen with Alduin cooking everybody.

I am quite alright with the way the beginning was. How it ends is another story. I was at least expecting some sort of movie. or prize or pat on the back.

I found the beginning very enjoyable. It allowed the player to know there was turmoil in the land.

Or in a prison cell in Arena or trapped in a cave in Daggerfall. Bethesda has always had you start out as a prisoner or similar in their games.

I dunno, they had me start off at birth in Fallout 3. Then shot in the head in Fallout New Vegas.

In the TES games you always start off as a prisoner. Even in the sacred Morrowind you start off as a newly freed prisoner. Nothing new here. At least Skyrim tells you why you are a prisoner (crossing the border illegally).

well thats what i mean there ARE plotholes to be worked around if someone made a mod to change some stuff in the beginning. hell it could be the thalmor that set the trap and capture the player and all aswell without imperials being in charge or present.

i think i only ever chose imperial side once and that what was with me making a imperial mage which to me was a unique idea at the time lol.

but maybe i'm alone with these ideas :-/

I almost always play khajiit (cat owner irl lol)

wow i didn't know that the live another life mode was that good i usually ended up in a far corner of the map around some very hard enemies and at lvl 1 thats just not right lol.

Yeah the whole Empire trying to kill me without a fair trial over some trivial issue as crossing a border (which you think would just be jail time)... and then Tullius brushing off trying to kill you as a simple misunderstanding.... sorry, but screw you. That makes it very difficult to join the Empires side and as mentioned by some Stomcloaks, the truth about the Empire shines through over that matter.

And then you speak to some Imperial soldiers / legates and they have this superiority complex that's almost as bad as the Dominion and just don't seem to be able to think about anything beyond what they're ordered to do, regardless if it's right or wrong..... like General Tullius, they just do what they're told like mindless robots.

I do agree with the OP.... the start of the game automatically gives you a clear impression of the Empire and their attitude and makes it difficult to side with them.

I did like how it was ambiguous at the beginning if you were just a traveler caught by mistake, or another criminal that was brought along with the rest... The choice gets to be up to you. =)
Although, I DO believe that the ending should have been slightly different.. And others have made videos to that effect! See How it should have ended : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icG4HlumKm8
Regardless, always have fun =)
