Coming back after a bit to play again...
noticed the money seems to come much slower than my initial playthrough...did the slow it down through patches?

Not that I know of. In fact, I seem to earn money faster and faster as I learn better ways to get it.

It doesn't really matter much, anyway. The most you'll use your money for is buying/building houses and getting the "Golden Touch" achievement.

You probably just got rusty. I know the same happened to me and Fallout: New Vegas after I took a short break.

I'm 20 or so hours in the game and my money is pretty low ($3500 or so). Any tips on making more money? I don't even have a house yet.

Sell things, or make things. An iron dagger may not seem like a good way to make money, but slap an enchantment on that puppy and you'll earn money fairly quickly.

Raiding dungeons and killing dragons is still the quickest way, but iron daggers with enchantments increases your smithing and enchanting skill each time. You can easily bankrupt the whole world with a pack full of iron daggers.

Pickup all alcohol, scrolls, and enchanted items. Keep what you like, sell what you don't. As for non-enchanted items, don't bother with iron. Steel and up for weapons and heavy armor. Light armor is one of the best kinds of loot for selling because it's, well, light and usually has a decent amount of worth to it. For example, fur armor with a low speech skill tends to be about 2 for weight and around 50 for value. So that's a value of 25 per pound (or whatever units they use for weight). Not too bad. Leather armor is also a good find since it's not much heavier than fur yet it's about 3 times as valuable. Oh, if you REALLY want gold and you're already siding with the Imperial Legion, then do the CW questline. Most of the Stormcloaks you kill in the forts will have scaled helmets (either wearing them or just hidden in their inventory). Each one is about 2 pounds but has a value of around 125. I made a lot of money just by selling the gear I picked up from Stormcloaks. Now that's what I call war profiteering!

I'm almost lvl 60 and closing in on my first million. I probably have about 700K atm and the cash just keeps pouring in! Here's what I do: Pick up everything and sell it. Upgrade everything as much as possible while keeping your resources in mind, of course. Sell the choice items to vendors you like, sell the crap to the losers.

Sell potions and scrolls. Craft everything you can possibly get your hands on, including chopped wood if you have no other skills yet. Once your Speech skill is up there a bit, you can buy up all the resources available and craft, craft, craft yourself into riches. The more resources you can gather/buy, the more money you can make from selling your wares.

If this style of play appeals to you, then I would strongly recommend some merchant mods. My fav is Adura's Merchant Mod which allows you to open up a stand in a few of the holds where you can dump your gear and have it magically transformed into gold and other rare items automatically. It's a pack-rat's dream come true!

Ok, another small question... where and what is the best shop to sell at?

Anywhere that takes your items and gives you money back. Seriously. The best shop is whichever one you can get to that will take your items. Khajiit caravans are pretty good since they tend to have a lot of gold on-hand. Same thing with fences if you join the Thieves Guild and unlock a few of them. Otherwise, try to sell items to their specific vendors. For example, sell as much armor and weapons as you can to blacksmiths before going to the general merchant. Otherwise, you might sell all of the armor and weapons to the general merchant and still be stuck with a few miscellaneous items they can buy but the blacksmith can't. Whereas if you go to the blacksmith first and you still can't sell that one last warhammer that's bogging down your carry weight, you can still sell it to the general merchant and then continue on with selling the rest of the miscellaneous stuff.

If you have a high speech skill, pretty much any vendor will do. However the Fences provide the best rates with the highest stores of money so they make a good first stop, assuming you can get to one.

There are a few 'prices are X% better' items you can get along the way including potions you can make...they tend to help but it still feels like a bit of a grind. There are a few mutli-effect potions that sell for good money if your doing the alchemy thing...there's always the Potion, Smith, improve, enchant, sell cycle as well..
