Can I play Skyrim on Windows 8?
We had XP which was often CTDing and often crashing to the Blue Screen of Death as well. So we saved up and shelled out a huge amount for the biggest computer with the most MegaHerz we could find. We asked for Windows 7 and we were advised that "there were problems with Windows 8 but they've all been fixed now." And Dell refused to sell us the machine without Windows 8.

The computer arrived yesterday but Skyrim CTDs as soon as it tries to start up! Help! What can we do?

Try this:

First go into your Steam directory, find steam.exe, right click > Properties > Compatibility and check "run as administrator". Now do the same in Steam\Steamapps\Common\Skyrim\ with tesv.exe.

Im running win8 ok I have had some issues, but it runs great when its up. Currently, running on a new lappy hp envy dv6 and couldnt buy it without win8 (I looked and win7 was just not available on the new comps).

I always stay up to date but it seems many apps have issues with win8 off and on. Recently I had to call tech support bc I was having some serious app crashes and found out my drivers became corrupted and needed a factory reinstall before I could update. Was a mess but this thing is running like a champ right now! /crossesfingers

Thanks for the suggestion Mahnogard. I've tried it, but so far it still crashes on startup. :(

Do you have any other ideas?

Sadly, no. I just used that method to solve similar issues with other programs not starting properly in Win 8. I unfortunately don't have the Win 8 machine with me at the moment.

It's sad that Dell wouldn't sell you a Win 7 system. I was able to get a new Win 7 laptop from them only two months ago. :( I like Win 8 okay, but I didn't want it on my gaming / audio / video laptop.

Other thoughts, if you haven't already tried them:

Go back to the tesv.exe properties and try some of the compatibility mode options.
Try starting directly from the exe instead of Steam. (Steam will need to be running, of course.)
Verify game cache.

If none of those work, try to start Skyrim, let it crash, note the time on the clock, then search > Event Viewer. If you're not familiar with using event logs, here's some basic info: http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/win8/windows8-event-viewer.htm

You'll want to look at the most recent entries in the Windows Logs > Applications, and in the details you'll likely see one that references either steam or tesv.exe down in the info pane. Click on the details tab in the info pane, right click > select all then copy and paste it here.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you Mahnogard. I've been researching ways of getting it up and running. A family member said "Try starting it up without mods!" And it ran!

Since then I've been starting it up with one more mod, playing for a bit, then starting it up with another addon. So far, there are two mods that cause a crash on start-up. They didn't cause a crash on my previous computer, though.
Mahnogard 29/jul/2013 às 12:08
Ah! You know, that's usually the first thing I would recommend but since it was a new computer I assumed you were trying to launch a clean install first. That's my fault for not asking about mods. :) I'm just glad you found the problem and got it working! Out of curiosity, which mods have you discovered that cause the crash?
Currawong 30/jul/2013 às 20:32
Hi Mahnoguard! The two that caused a CTD were

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim > Workshop > Torinsoul's Workshop > Revised Assassin

and

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim > Workshop > IhmeHihhuli's Workshop > Dragonbone Weapons Loot

although I've just noticed that Dragonbone Weapons Loot requires Dawnguard (naturally, since dragonbone weapons were first introduced in Dawnguard) so I'll try that mod again when I've got Dawnguard running on the new computer.

There may be others, I had 58 mods working on the old computer, now I have 40 more to try out, one at a time. I might try two at a time, to save time.

Not to berrate you but didn't this strike you as a bit... off? If someone told me they'd refuse to sell me a product unless I went with the latest and greatest I'd walk out and go somewhere else. Personally I don't like Windows 8's setup, it makes me jump through hoops just to find something as simple as My computer folder.

Hopefully you get things working, might I also recommend you use the sticky at the top of the threads. BOSS is a wonderful tool for ferreting out incompatibilities you missed.

I upgraded my system from 7 to 8 a while back and picked up Skyrim Legendary Edition during the summer sale.... had zero issues with installation, starting it up or playing & had no need to change compatibility or run as admin.

I can only suggest making sure your video drivers are up to date on your machine. All brand new systems need to have their drivers checked for updates as they usually are just loaded with the stock driver that came with the hardware, which can be months or even a year out of date.

And then try running the game with no mods applied to see if it's a mod causing the issue.

Never mind.... problem is already solved.... moving on :P
