Do they have eyes in the back of their heads?

So I slowly (slower then overencumbered) crouch walk over to a lady behind her, I get super close, ready to initiate a backstab, then bam, she detectes me, even though I move at little increments at a time. She probably heard you. I don't know if being overencumbered affects stealth, but it probably should. For very sensitive enemies in well-lit areas you can get a much easier stealth kill with a bow.

A high stealth skill coupled with a few stealth perks makes sneaking around and backstabbing someone not such a pain.

If you are wearing armor without muffling the noise or having appropriate stealth perks, yes, someone can hear you.

One of the quickest ways to build up your stealth skill is to sneak everywhere, even if someone notices you occasionally. Yes, you travel slower, but it is almost magical how quickly you build up your stealth skill. Spend a few perk points for appropriate stealth skills and you become virtually invisible sneaking around in broad daylight right in front of someone.

You can also use potions, enchanting and Illusion spells. If you use Illusion for stealth you'll need to work for that Silent Casting perk asap.

You don't have to sneak "Everywhere". I would only do it in hostile areas. Keep a dagger on you and a bow. Killing/hurting enemies while being hidden also increases the stealth skill. Picking their pockets also does it. THe illusion spells Muffle will make it harder for people to notice you and Calm will make most weaker enemies stop attacking you/forget you and allow you to sneak kill them when they turn around.

Potions, yep, magic, yep...but also, you get sneak bonusses for Archery too, and a killer perk upgrade allowance for it in the Archery tree...One of my fave skills...

The first thing that that guy would get off me will be a sneak attack arrow, in the head.. just to say Hi...

Depends on if you want to look at the rest of what you get.....rather than that one, inequal thing you pointed out...Why you are trying to say daggers are better than Bows - isn't the point, I am not gonna just kill this guy with my Bow....think about it...I can hit that guy hard without having to even close any distance.....

What's gonna get the job done better then?...

Archery can kill from the shadows at the other side of the room, so sometimes it just really is better for stealth kills. You can pluck a target surrounded by people and noone notices a thing. Also bows can be very powerful. Quite sufficient to getting the job done.

For me personally being able to hide a distance away while I use a stealthy bow attack is far better than getting within melee attack range for a chance at a backstab. YMMV.
