Whiterun CTD
Ok this is a strange one, I been able to get into Whiterun on my main char up until today but now I CTD when I try to go there.

The strangest part of this is that all my other chars have no problems with whiterun. Also note any saves of this char outside of whiterun does it too, like even the ones I did a year ago. Only save of this char that works atm which is where this char is inside whiterun and it does load but that is 100 hours back.

I have tried deactivating all mods and such but that dun work. I mean all my other chars can travel into whiterun but not this one. Weird.

Any thoughts of how to get around this or is this char pretty much hosed....

Did you keep an eye on your savegame file getting bloated or not?
Whiterun is known to give issues, it's the one place where people with monster computers will get framedrops at a certain spot, so it's not too uncommon.

Did you try doing a complete clean savegame and then enter?
With complete clean i mean : Uninstall all mods (dont just uncheck them, just uninstall, pro-tip : make a copy of your data folder for easy reinstall ;) )
Once you uninstalled all mods go ingame, load up an old save, it will say ti will rely on mods that aint ingame anymore and if you want to load anyways, choose yes, now save the game on a "new" savegame, and exit the game completely, now you have a clean savegame.

Start the game, load the "clean" savegame, can you enter Whiterun now?

Data folder is 11 gigs so yea, not going to back that up. Perhaps just nuking all the mods after it updates on the launncher, then make fresh save, then let steam re-DL my sub mods; that also work?

Then again I dunno if that will effect/delete all my hoarded junk and gear (collected since launch lol). :S

It's lookin like majority of the saves got corrupted some how for this character. What does not make sense is that it only effects this one only; files are 15-18 megs per so I dunno about 'bloat'.

Guess this 400+ hour char will not be able to go into Whiterun. I mean I don't really need anything there but not being able to go in bugs the hell outa me. Lastly, if I start again....I have no idea which mod might have done this so it could happen again....

The idea behind this all is : No Mods whatsoever.
So the game is completely vanilla, then try saving your character onto a *new* savegame slot.

Now restart skyrim, and try entering Whiterun, basically you made your character a vanilla character and are entering vanilla Whiterun, if this fails it's abit of a lost cause, but this is the best way to get a character back.

Once you can enter whiterun slowly start adding your mods again.

Btw are you using the steam workshop to add your mods?
If so it's known to bugg out very easily, so i'd suggest using the Nexus website for your modding needs, and would go as far as to say to get BOSS aswell, i use both Nexus and Boss and am running with like over 80 mods currently without a hitch.

What is BOSS btw? Is it a modmanger?
JoxerHD Jul 6, 2013 @ 3:50am
BOSS is the old "Better Oblivion something something" load order tool. (so a mod manager)
Which was updated to now work with all Bethesda games a year or so ago (i think).
I had some conflicts using the Nexus Mod Manager, but 1 run of boss (which takes like 20 seconds) and everything ran fine.

Good to know. Thanks.

Do you have a mod that requires a DLC or SKSE or SkyUI, that is in Whiterun? ( A home mod or quest or such?)
jjb-54 Jul 6, 2013 @ 10:01am
BOSS (Better Oblivion Sorting Software)
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/6

Also I found that if the MOD is found on NEXUS - I have a whole lot less "load order issues" when getting them from Nexus and using th Nexus Mod Mgr.

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/modmanager/

Between the two it makes Mod Management a whole lot easier.

Yes you still have to read the FINE PRINT and pay attention to "REQUIRED DLC/MOD", like I mentioned above - SKSE or SkyUI or a specific 2nd MOD to run the 1st mod.

Nuthin works. Char is incapable of entering WR without instant CTD.

Sigh. Had no problems up until last few DLs which was bunny follower, bosmer armor, and flash step. Possibly conflicted with whiterun enhanced...I dunno. What baffles me is that it effected every other save except the single one I had in white run, 100 odd hours ago. I mean I nuked those mods before trying to load em because I figured one them was the culprit. I have never had a problem with Steam mods after 400+ odd hours up till today.

Steam workshop mods have given me nothing but grief, so i can feel your pain, losing a 400+ hours character though... ouch.
Dont suppose you feel like posting your savefile somewhere to see if any of us can give it a go in fixing it?

Would it be possible to see the list of MODS that you have? (Reason I'm asking, I found a mod that I really liked, based on the page and pics of the mod. Really really liked it.

But it gave constant CTD's when I got close to it.

Reason - the Creator forgot to post that it was NOT compatitable w/two other mods (I had). I had no small challenge of Dis-able all - and slowly re-inabled and found the cause.

When I mentioned it to the creator - "Oops, I forgot to mention that, didn't I?" . o O ( sigh )

Then I had another experience where a WINTERHOLD MOD had a strange 'cause/effect' in Riverwood of all places! I proved it to that creator and suddenly several other people said, "Finally!" - they had, like me, looked in all mods in and around Riverwood and failed to find the answer.

I would just hate to see you loose 400+ hours of your game - as I too can feel that pain.

Here is one thing you might try:

Goto: <Harddrive>:\My Games\Skyrim

There you will find two (2) or three (3) files:

RendererInfo.txt
Skyrim.ini
SkyrimPrefs.ini.

Move these to a different holding directory. Move do not copy.

IF you have SKSE directory here - then MOVE the files in that directory too and then delete the directory.

Then click on the Skyrim Icon and let it go through the list of MODS until finished.

(IF - you have SKSE then close down Skyrim Icon and load your game through SKSE - these steps will create NEW files. I found this fixed some issues that I just could not get mod deletion alone to do the job.)

Then see if it works.

Now - IF not redo the MOVE files above in the \MY GAMES\SKYRIM and we will go to:

Step 2.

Uninstall SKYRIM totally and than re-install. This should then remove all traces of any mods that you think were "cause/effct" of Whiterun CTD. But make sure you totally remove the afore mentioned mods that you think were the cause.

Then first load the OLDEST SAVED game you have and see if it works. If it does - then move to the newer Saved Games to see where you are "good".

Now if none of the above works and we afirmed your Mods that might be the "Cause" ...

Then sadly you will have to start over.

Eh I give up, just gonna go from the single save that I found does work....net loss is around 120 hours which aint bad I guess; better than restarting lol.

Sucks, but I don't think this can be fixed. It is entirely possible this was some sorta bug with the game it self and not some mod but who knows.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

note to self, stay far away from new mods....just incase.

edit. fyi i did try fresh install but no dice.
