Vampires are great if you're a mage or stealthy character. Personally I'm not a fan of playing Vampire Lords, they feel extremely... unfun for me. For one people recognize you as a Vampire lord. Attack or commit a crime and it stays when you shift back even if no one sees you. You can't slowfall off high cliffs, despite having a levitation and using wings. Being a vampire is always an in your face annoyance if you want to sell something or not constantly have a bounty on your head. If you use Frostfall being a vampire means you won't need to worry about freezing to death. I still prefer werewolves usually.

Being a werewolf is less annoying unless you get a mod like Tales of Lycanthrope or Moonlight tales. You gain quite a lot for very little downsides unmodded of course. If you shift out of sight you can go on a murder spree, vanish into a building, shift back and no ones any wiser. You can also eat any food or drink from any water source without worrying about diseases which helps with the mod Realistic Needs and diseases. You still need to eat but like the vampire diseases won't disable you.

I'm fairly sure your wrong about the crime thing as I did the majority of the brotherhood side jobs by transforming into a vampire lord out of sight, swooping in and killing the target and then running away to where nobody could see me to untransform and never got a bounty for killing any of them. Also later in game bounties become a joke in the major holds when you can pay away your fine by bribing the guard.

Also people only recognize you if you have dawnguard when your transformed, at which point its pretty much well duh your a hulking bat humanoid hybrid. Otherwise they make a few snarky comments about hunger in your eyes or you being afraid of sun but don't call you a vampire.

Well, you can be both with console commands. Just contract Lycanthropy first, then use the proper console command to get rid of the disease immunity effect and then either spawn 10 vampires and stand idle untill you contract the disease or just go to Bloodlet Throne. So... Werepyres ftw?

I'm talking vanilla Skyrim with Dawnguard installed.

I prefer Vampire Lords. They get to change back whenever I want to, while a Werewolf has to wait until the effect wears off. And since Werewolves eat hearts to level up, and those same hearts also prolong the effect, then the wait can be long indeed. Vampire Lords also have more awesome powers, like Vampiric Grip. "I find your lack of faith disturbing."

You cannot advance your normal skills in either form, so that is a major negative. You also cannot pick up any loot, so after clearing a dungeon you have to go back in for all the riches. They are fun to play in, but once you reach the maximum level in either form there is a good chance you use them only with difficult bosses, if even then, or just for the heck of it.

If I'm not mistaken, you actually get to swap forms when you want to. There is a person for both options you need to talk to, and they "purge" your previous form and make you a big bat or a big dog when you feel the need. So that was a Bethesda cop-out right there.

First off, what type of character are you playing? Are you playing a melee type role? Or are you playing a sneaky type role? Or a caster type role?

The Werewolf:
Werewolfs are very strong beasts for being able to land more power attacks faster, sprint faster, and regen stamina faster. Werewolfs of Skyrim are also able to ragdoll enemies by doing forward power attacks that knocks them off their feet as if you used fus ro dah on them. With Dawnguard and Dragonborn installed, your werewolf abilities greatly improve, being able to feed off of almost every living creature, slow down time while transforming. The possiblies are endless.

The Vampire:
Vampires are shadowy creatures of the night, they drink the blood of mortals, and are able to use mad trickery with magic to slay their enemies. Vampires of Skyrim are very powerful spell casters, able to make a meer mage's illusion spells nothing but a laughing stock compared to the power of the Vampire. Vampires are also able to see in the dark, making all of night look like its meer day. Vampires are also able to use the Necromancy side of Conjuration once a day to raise a fallen corps. With Dawnguard installed, you become the paragon of the race, the Vampire Lord.

The Vampire Lord:
Vampire Lords are the paragon of the Vampire race, the pure bloods. Vampire Lords share many common traits that the normal Vampire has, however, Vampire Lords are able to take on a terrorfying form that makes both men and mer flee before their power. While in their true pure blooded forms, Vampire Lords are able to glad across water without touching it, sprint faster at the speed of a werewolf with their vampiric wings, use blood magic to slay their enemies, and have nightpowers that gives them an unquestionable advantage in battle.

Now that I've explained some basic info about what your character can become, Werewolfs are a better choice for warrior type characters. Vampires are better for stealth type or magic-user type characters. Although Vampire Lord is better for casters as it adds more to your basic amount of spells and powers.

Hope this helps! :D

i think vampire for melee are pretty good too for the resistance that give , like a dark elf + 50 fire resist natural ability and vampire decrease fire magic - 50 so your at 0 % fire resist but have 50 % resist to all other resistance so its very good

It doesn't work that way, at a weakness of 50% you'll get 25% weakness just being a dunmer.

Work on your math their son.

I also forgot to put in my comment that vampires are weaker in sun light as their magicka, health, and stamina are weaker and do NOT regen
so being a vampire is a warrior's doom because if your in sun light, no more power attacks.

UNLESS you crazy power enchant your gear.

With alchemy!
