Do I HAVE TO be a vampire or werewolf?
Good afternoon all,

I am still something of a Skyrim noob. My main character is only level 18 and hasnt yet taken either of the paths noted in my subject line. My question is.... do you absolutely have to be one or the other to enjoy the full extent of the game? It may sound lame, but I dont want either corruption on this, my first and main, character. He is a humble sword-n-board Nord, caught unawares by his dragonborn-ness. I like who he is now and dont want to see him as either a wolf or a blood sucker. However, my need to complete the game and all questlines may trump my sentimentality.

So... while most folks ask which is better, I ask you, oh gods of Skyrim, can I choose neither?

Thanks

no you dont. both paths are optional but they have major flaws and weaknesses. vamps are very weak to fire and sunlight but are very good with illusion magic and sneaking. werewolves are very fast and immensely strong but there regeneration rate sucks and they die very quickly.

No, you don't. But if you become either one of them, don't choose vampire. Vampires suck. (Pun unintended). You can be both if you want, but vampires have so many weaknesses. Werewolves don't have many.

for dawngaurd you have the choice. If you play through the companions quests you will need to become a were at some point to continue, but you have the oppurtunity to cleanse yourself during the questline.

If you want to complete the companions quest line, you have to be a werewolf.

I think it totally sucks how it is completely unrealistic and weak RPG'd....What? You can be BOTH?.....OM f G....

You are supposed to have to CHOOSE, Bethesda....CHOOSE...Y'know, like...oh I don't know... ROLE PLAY maybe?????

Wow, nerd rage much? If you dont want to be both, dont be both. Problem solved. You are playing a fantasy game and RPG essentially means "pretend", so just pretend the option isnt in the game.

Would not completing the Companions quest line prevent me from experiencing a large chunk of the game? If its just "ok you're a werewolf and here's your official Companions ID card" then done, I think I can skip that without my OCD tweaking too hard. :)

Yeesh... even more reason I dont want to be either. I love Skyrim by day for its amazing vistas and scenery, so vamps would be a no-go for me. I also dont wanna be dying left and right as a wolfie.

'' If you dont want to be both, dont be both. Problem solved.''

Yeah I guess that is true...but it isn't very true to the Genre...you still have to set the parameters of the game like GOD...like how using the Creation Kit breaks the game..Yeah, your idea sweeps it under the carpet as a temp bandaid...but it isn't a really intelligent design feature...

You should be made to have to decide, not allowed a free will with no consequences for your actions...where is the realism in that? Where is the role play in that?...Nah..bit crap that I think...

Luckily, I am able to create the imagination of the missing consequence parameters...but I just think it's a pretty dumbed down feature....

Eh. No more so than not joining the College of Winterhold, Thieves Guild, or Dark Brotherhood will.

Personally, except for one character (my only one to do No Stone Unturned, which requires joining both the Guild [until you become a full member] and College ['til just after Under Saarthal], as well as joining or destroying the Dark Brotherhood), I choose one of those 4 factions and ignore the existance of the rest...

becoming a werewolf is okay to complete the questline of the companions. doing so will affect the final battle against alduin by adding the companions harbinger as an ally when fighting him.

vampires suffer 25%-100% weakness to fire which can be helped with resistance enchantments and perks. being Dunmer aslo helps. during the day (5am-7pm) vampires have reduced attributes and regen. this is the most concerning weakness, however if you play through dawngaurd you can obtain Auriels bow which can help you to block out the sun. You will of course be a Vampire Lord which definitely makes up for the weaknesses. Dont shrug off being a vampire lord b/c of the weaknesses, they are amazing and have strong abilities, moreso than werewolves.
Werewolves have no weakness at all and have 100% resistance to disease, so you wont contract Sanguinare Vampiris. However while you are in Beast Form you have NO health regen. As a low level werewolf you are very fragile in big fights. the only way to restore health is to feed on dead bodies, which requires you to have killed someone and to be free of danger (you can feed while being attacked but it is not smart to do so). This is also the only way to extend your time in beast form. Yes Werewolves can not freely change back and forth like Vampire lords can. In human form you can activate your beast form but then you are stuck in beast form untill time runs out, but you can wait to pass the time by. Once returned to human form you must wait a day to use beast form again. Obtaining the ring of Hircine can make all your headaches go away b/c this forces transformation whenever equiped allowing you more controll. Being a werewolf has no benefits to you besides disease resistance which I think cannot compare to the benefits of vampirirsm.
I hope this enlightens some of you to give vampirism a try, as it can be more rewarding than lycanthropy

I appreciate the info, though really I want to avoid being either one. At least on this character. I was mostly trying to determine how much, if any, of the story I would miss or being unable to complete if I stayed a mere mortal nord.

There is no need to pick either one and being one of them gimps your lategame
